You can get in on my $5 Mil, just by helping underwrite my $50,000 upfront costs. Send me 10K and I'll give you 20%.... when I receive it. THEN you can spend your Mil. on the Bil. jackpot! How dat??

Caller ID is a wonderful thing - we IGNORE anything we don't recognize (and those that I want to ignore - my VOIP provider blocks with an error message). I also block anonymous / private calls (if you don't have the guts to let me see who you are - I don't want to talk to you). my phone is for MY convienence - not someone trying to sell me something - if I didn't call them - I'm not buying.

Verizon kept calling me but never left a message. One day I finally answered and it was a robocall trying to tell me my statements were getting returned as undeliverable, and to call them back at their regular customer service number. When I finally got through, it turned out they had somehow mixed together my current address with the previous address I had over ten years ago.

All Verizon's got going for it is their superb cell phone network. Their customer support is pretty bad and their salesmen are liars. But that network is so good you can't help but go back to them.

and I received a call from "POLICE DEPT" informing me there is a break-in in the United States every 15 seconds and for a small monitoring fee can have a an alarm system installed.
Only problem, our local police department has an area code of 770 not 503.

I would say 90% of my incoming calls are now a nuisance-type -- be it scam, political or charity.

Rachel has been very quiet the last month or 2 but in the last week she is back with a vengeance. Getting 2-3 calls a day like 3 days a week between 2 home lines and 2 cell lines. Endless annoyance which can't be blocked because every single incoming number is different. They have even changed their tactic. You used to be able to tie them up and waste their time by just saying you have $25,000 in CC debt now the "pre-screener" needs the CC number and the CC company phone number first and they call with you on the line to verify if YOU are legit.

When they tell me "I AM PRE-QUALIFIED" I ask if they know my name or phone number and they immediately hang up. I used to be able to tie them up for 4-5 minutes but can't even do that anymore.

Now I just hit "1" for more info and spout some really nasty profanities at them. Doesn't accomplish anything but it makes me feel better. :)

That plus now the utility slammers are suddenly calling my wife's cell like 3x a day and 5 days a week all from similar numbers (206 A/C) but there is no way to block their call as she is on pre-paid.

Since I live in NJ there are (so far) ZERO political calls or TV ads.

I'd love to stick Rachel in one of Uncle Mitt's binders full of women and burn it.

Is the phone company ("the"- it used to be "the", but there are so many now) at all liable for providing service? And how doe these Rachels get a phone number that when you call it back immediately says it's no longer in service?

Must be legit because today I received 2 calls from the local power utility (been out since Mon with at least another week or 2 to go we are told) and when I dialed them back got "number not in service"). Must be a strictly outbound number. From what I understand you also can easily spoof caller ID with some VOIP services.

They are also spoofing their numbers usually, so the phone number that pops up on your caller ID is many times not a valid number.

There was a time (still may be the case today) where you could specify a line as "outbound only" with the phone company and all inbound calls would either ring disconnected or busy.

My guess here is Rachel is spoofing numbers and their dialer keeps a list of disconnected/invalid numbers which are then used for spoofing.

Yes, that all seems likely. Now wondering why it's taking so long to shut them down.
