Really, do they have to make it so hard? All I want to do is add HBO!

Hoosier, thank you for confirming just how condescending you are. If you would so kindly refrain from posting to my thread I would appreciate it.

All you have to do is change your package to Choice Extra, and add HD Access, and DVR service. It costs $1 extra per month, you get the exact same channels you have now.

I used to have the same package you have and decided it was worth the extra $1 a month to be able to change things myself witout having to call in.

Ah, not a bad idea. $1 a month doesn't seem to be all that bad to keep from having to call.

Go to UserCP, and on the left is a box to Edit Ignore list. Click that, and in the box that says "Add a Member to your list", type Hoosier205 and click ok. Instant end to condescending messages, irritating comments, and pot stirring...and you wont even miss out on any of the truly helpful comments left in your thread :) You are welcome!

Now, as to Merg's comment, I do not understand why DirecTv does the grandfathered package thing anyway. In their Terms of Service, they have the right to change the packages and costs at will. Why they dont just automatically change you to a current package at the same time they raise the prices at the beginning of each year, is puzzling.
It would save them, and us, a lot of asking and guessing why.

BTW, if you are going to upgrade your package, and like movies, the Ultimate package for just $5 more (I believe), adds The Movie Channel, and Encore HD, as well as a few more music channels. Might be worth checking out.

Thanks Dave! I wish I had known about that feature some time ago :)

I am going to run the "ultimate" package by the wife and see if that is something that would interest her. Pretty sure it would since she like all the variety of the music channels and adding more is a plus to her. If so, then you just made me look good around my house. I owe you one.

Sounds like the their programming package musical chairs is a game of semantics more than anything else. Ah, the joys of TV.

I get frustrated as well. I can't change anything online anymore. I get the same message as you  its a pain to call in when I should be able to add this like i did before.

Its just one of the inconveniences of keeping an old outdated package. Truthfully, I think D* should have eliminated the old packages already and forced the customers over to the new packages. And before anyone tries to call me out, I'm still on the old TC+ package as well. The only difference is I dont ever complain about having to call in to make changes because I have the old legacy package.

WHY, though? It costs nothing (maybe a few minutes of a programmer's time) to support this. And when calling in, I've NEVER had a CSR attempt to upsell me (I consider this a plus). I refuse to pay more for the exact same channels (you can't go by their website's channel listing - it's flat out wrong for TC+) and there's no other reason to change it. I'll call in the maybe once per year I need to, but I'm going to resent the hell out of it!

It sounds like D* is making this more difficult that it needs to be. For example, if we could do more inline that call it would be CHEAPER for D* as they could employ less CSR, etc..

Many companies are moving to a model where they charge to call and book, get support, etc, but if done online it's "free".

Wouldn't be hard at all to have a simple radio button option that says

    Select One
( ) Keep Current Package and add HBO
( ) Upgrade to New Package and add HBO

    Whoa, that's difficult.

996991 - I agree with you. I tried to add SHO online a few months ago and it said I couldn't for the same reason - that I'm in a grandfathered package, which was news to me since I'm in Choice XTRA HD/DVR and have been for 2.5 years.

I can understand them making it a pain to cancel a channel, but you'd think they'd want to make things easier that brings them more money.

Makes you wonder how many people DON'T call because they don't want to deal with the hassle and then it ends up costing D* lost revenue???

Well since I just got a call from D* that my install for tomorrow morning needs to rescheduled AGAIN (this makes the 4th install appointment) since they don't have the equipment needed to do the install I went ahead and added HBO over the phone. So in the process of being very unhappy I added more service to pay them each month. Lovely. All because my wife wants to watch Boardwalk Empire.

I plan to have SEVERAL drinks this evening.

It is frustrating adding and removing things when you have a Legacy package. That being said its not as hard as dealing with DNS feeds. Try that one on for size. There are so many reps that dont understand it properly and can remove them very easily. Thats a hassle to get fixed. Another good one is adding an owned receiver. Im convinced that the only department that can activate a receiver as owned without starting your commitment over is the access card department. Its a owned receiver. Whats so hard about that. If its verified as owned why would a rep add it as leased and better yet tell you it was activated as owned?

Those things being said no company is perfect or has everything the way we all would like it. Im sure they have their reasons even if it is just being lazy. I also love D* and will put up with all of these minor things to have the provider I do care so much for. I would not even consider going elsewhere unless ST moved to another provider. If E* had it and D* had it as well I would still stay with D* even if E* was cheaper as D* is the best in my opinion.

I hope you get the programming you want. Consider changing to a current package but keep in mind that when prices increase again next year that $1 savings might be more at that time for existing legacy packages. Once you move off it you can not go back unless it was a mistake. Hope we were able to help even if we were just here to hear your frustrations. Thanks for sharing.

D* Rep: Sorry, we need to reschedule again, the equipment is still out of stock
Customer: Really...I scheduled the day off from work, and wont be able to reschedule that. How about some free HBO to compensate me for my lost wages?
D*: We can give you free Showtime...
Customer: I want HBO. Please add it for me.

??? Wonder how that would have worked out?

I thought they used to give you a credit for every missed appointment, they dont do that anymore? Or since they called within 12 hours, they dont consider the appointment missed?

To bad you live so far from here, Id come install it for you, just for one of those drinks ;)

Good thing you are convinced of that, because it is the case that the only department that can activate equipment as owned is the ACDT.

That you Josh. It is no doubt a mix of one part trying to understand why it really is so difficult for D* and one part just venting knowing that I'm not the only one that has to deal with this. It doesn't make me less frustrated but it sure does to help me understand just how flawed their process is.

Thanks again for for your reply. It's nice to have know that the majority of those that reply to threads like mine do so with a sense of empathy. Makes it easier to ignore the negative replies :goodjob:

I actually tried asked that. Was told they cannot give HBO free or discounted. Offered me Starz for 6 months. I don't care for Starz. All I want is HBO. She said, do you still want to keep SHO? I said of course, Dexter starts this week. Well then I can give you SHO free for 6 months. Fine, works for me. To do it she must cancel my sub to SHO and then add the 6 month free SHO promo. Comes back from placing me on hold and says she has bad news. Says the system will not allow her to add SHO since it was just cancelled a few minutes ago. ARGH!!!! I tell her just put it back and I'll just swallow the bitter pill and hold my breath for the next appt but that if the next one is screwed up, I am cancelling and moving to cable or uverse to give one of them a try. She puts me on hold and says she found a workaround by giving me a bill credit for what the six months of SHO would have cost me. Perfect. All is right with the world from the CSR side but having the install up in the air is the part that just cause me all sorts of stress. Stay tuned.................. :)

In a morning where I am a dragging just a bit your post put a smile on my face. Thanks for the comedy!
