Yes, it's very easy to add an external drive. You can then go back and forth with the external and internal drives. The internal and external drives do not complement each other. Adding an external drive should answer the question about the HDD being bad or the box being the culprit. If you need help setting up/acquiring an external device, just ask.

Rich is right, it’s easy. I have a 6TB drive both inside the DVR and one in my external dock. I use one drive for all my recorded 4K content, and the other for normal recordings. It may help troubleshoot your issue.

How does one setup an external HDD on the HR54/C61k setup? How does one go back amd forth b/w interior amd exterior drives once the ext drive is installed?

Get an external dock with another hard drive and connect to esata port, and power on. Then reboot the DVR and it will recognize the external hard drive and automatically format it.

To switch back to internal drive, reboot DVR and immediately turn off power on the dock, then DVR will boot up internal drive.

the dock is appealing for me as you could create a library, perhaps use each EHD for one genre: sport, movies, cereals, etc

You need to buy an external device first. This must have a port that is labeled "eSATA". Let me see if I can find one quickly...here's one: https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com...station+esata&qid=1551634882&s=gateway&sr=8-7
I found this by putting "esata docking station" in the Amazon search box. In the Amazon offering there are pictures of the back wall of the dock. You will clearly see the "eSATA" port. Run that search and you will see many eSATA external devices.

Once you get the external device you will need an HDD. You might try this: https://www.amazon.com/Purple-Surve...sata&qid=1551635231&s=gateway&sr=8-4-fkmrnull

You can get less expensive HDDs but the Surveillance HDDs are built with DVRs in mind.

Once you get the equipment come back and we'll lead you thru the simple process.
