The RDR-VXD655 recorder takes over control of the camera & starts camera play but doesn't record. That "not connected" msg. appears for a moment.

Pavillion 17-g133cl (Touch) Has a Memory Card Reader slot but no PCMCIA slot. Neither does husband's Dell Inspiron.

This appears to be exactly like my camera:

    That's it ! It's really ANALOG recordings.
Sorry, the camcorder cannot play Analog tapes and convert the signal to Digital, eg DV port is dead for A/V data transfer this time; only commands could travel the line.

Well, just in case if you'll get DV tapes, I would use other PC:

True for earlier Hi8 tapes, but the later tapes recorded with digital Handycam get the same "not connected" when trying to dub.

Got an S-video cord at Best Buy for the analog tapes; firewire couldn't be tested, but advice was cheap online firewires not good. They approved of the Belkin. When received, & I attempt dubbing with the S-video & Belkin, will post results to hopefully close this thread out. Really appreciate all the responses - thank you all!
