    First please excuse my typing
    i have had this problem with fox ota recordings for months
    i tried all the usual fixes gained form this site which is great
    i have an hr22-100 and am21
    since 24 is my favorite program my first solution was to install a tv tuner card in my computer which worked perfectly same signal split to d* and computer

    this result led me to believe that my receiver/am21 must be at fault so i called d*
    i got lucky and got a csr who was very helpful however i have been with d* for over 12 yrs and have had great success with csr's
    i explained all the testing i had done and he put me on hold
    he said he was going to check my area to see if there was any known problems
    he came back and said he was going to elevate my problem to the engineering dept he said to wait for a couple of days and try recording again
    he took my model # and software version then asked me what time it was downloaded(i thought this was interesting)
    this was on a friday on monday i recorded 24 everything was perfect
    i dont know how they fixed it but they did
    this was 3 weeks ago and all is well

    this was long winded but i hope it helps those of you who are still having problems

    There do seem to be more reports from this region that others, though several different stations are involved. I'm going to record "24" OTA tonight (with a satellite backup) and see what happens. I tried this about two weeks ago and was still getting the immediate "Delete/Don't Delete" message.

    let us know how it turns out

    since d* fixed my problem i wonder if it was a region fix

    so far i have no problems on ota or d* channels

    I will post here later tonight. Unless there was a software update that affected the OTA tuner, not sure what kind of "fix" DirecTV could implement, since in this case, the signal in question is not going through their hands. I don't have any problem with the satellite delivered channels -- just OTA -- and only FOX.

    you are right
    i only had problems with ota/fox signal also
    then it would seem to be the am21 or the d* tuner
    now i am more confused than ever
    i am glad it is fixed but i dont know how they did it

    Well, recorded "24" OTA on two different machines -- an HR20 with internal tuner, and an HR23 with an AM21 -- results were perfect on both. Definitely promising, though I will have to record a few more shows before I am convinced it is fixed ...

    i was hesitant as well to believe it was fixed
    that is why i waited 3 weeks before posting it here
    i have not watched 24 from last night yet but it should be ok
    hope all is well with you
    maybe others could let us know also if their problem has been solved

    Well, no luck tonight. Recorded "American Idol" and can only play the first two seconds before I get the "Delete" message. So, definitely not fixed here. Also recorded it with an Elgato EyeTV -- no problem with that.

    what is elgato eyetv
    sorry you still have the problem. Have you tried any of the normal fixes such as red button reset, menu reset, clearing the am21 and re-setup

    i watched 24 last night and it was perfect. This is five weeks in a row so i feel comfortable saying that my system is fixed.

    Maybe you should call them

    maybe they are in contact with the local stations to correct this problem. I know you said you work for a station are you in a position to be involved in this issue

    Elgato EyeTV is a USB tuner for the Mac. It's a great little device.

    Yep, I've done all the normal things that one would expect, but I get the same result on several HD DVRs. Haven't done a complete OTA setup from scratch though -- I suppose that's worth a try.

    I suppose I could call DirecTV, but the messages earlier in this thread indicate that it is a known issue and it's being worked on, so not sure that would accomplish anything.

    If you read this before 8pm tonight, do me a favor and record FOX OTA from 8-10pm and let me know if your recordings turn out. I will do the same and we will compare notes.

    No, because it only happens with the off-air signal -- the satellite delivered version is fine.

    i always record human target but will also record american idol. I have recorded human target for weeks now with no problems.i will also record theese on computer to verify signal quality.

    We will see

    i also thought it would do no good to call d* but was pleasantly
    surprised

    No problems for me tonight. The whole two-hour block recorded fine. So far this week, that makes Monday=Good, Tuesday=Bad, Wednesday=Good. Hmmm, I wonder what will happen if record on Thursday? :D

    i recorded the 2 hr block as requested
    since i dont watch american idol i used it as a test
    i was able to fast forward reverse pause all countless times
    i had no problems at all i have not watched human target yet but i have no reason to believe it will not be ok as well

    Well, neither show turned out on Thursday. I see a pattern here, though I can't explain it!

    Monday = Good
    Tuesday = Bad
    Wednesday = Good
    Thursday = Bad

    Looks like I can record FOX every other day. :D

    HR22/100 + AM21 0x3de

    We record programs from CPTV 24-1 (Western CT); in some cases, the recordings play back fine, in others, we have
    * Plays a few seconds then goes to "Delete?" prompt
    * Plays OK, but attempts to FF or RW skip to end/beginning
    * Plays OK, can FF or RW at speed 1, but not faster

    Watching directly OTA works fine. We also watch 30-1 (NBC30) OTA, but rarely record it (record WNBC from Sat), so don't have any data points on that channel.

    I've been trying to figure this one out. It seems like it might be that PCR (program clock reference) jitter could cause it, yet the FOX signal does not seem to exhibit that. The one thing that is different about FOX from most other signals is that the compressed signal is switched in the digital domain from local to net and back, formatted to SMPTE310 in an ASI wrapper. Most other stations decode network to HDSDI, switch to local HDSDI which is typically upconverted from SD SDI, and then convert the whole shootin' match to SMPTE310 later where they apply local compression.

    The difference is that you are seeing a different signal spliced in and out during local breaks on FOX than the signal you see from the network, while you see the same signal all the time from other stations (final encoding of both net and local come from the same equipment rather than from spliced streams of content encoded sightly differently from the station and the network). What is different between the two that would cause this issue?

    Maybe the local part of the signal has excessive PCR jitter. Or, if the PSIP clock is not perfectly in sync from the station, there might be a discrepancy between the net signal and the local signal. Maybe seeing discrepancies in the running program time stamp when switching from net to local is what is throwing the DVR for a loop, and that allows it to get confused as to which PTS is the one to obey. But PSIP is muxed in even when in network, so I'm skeptical about that as well, unless the time defaults to network time when in network.

    I think it is time to notify the local stations that seem to have this problem, as it might be related to their local insertion content. Again, the FOX signal seems to be OK as far as PCR and PTS is concerned, and problems with those are about the only things I can think of that could cause this issue.

    I work at a station that has this problem, and we are just as baffled as anyone else. The problem only seems to affect DirecTV DVRs using OTA. It happens even during non-network programming, so it would not seem to be a network problem per se, or anything to do with disruptions at the splice point. It's very weird. The only that seems to be suspicious is that it seemed to start around the same time the new splicers were installed (last summer).
