Which DVR do you have? Do you have an external drive?

I think it goes something like this (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

HR20 and HR21 hold 50 hours HD.

HR22, HR23, HR24 hold 100 hours HD.

HR34, HR44 hold 200 hours HD.

These are just general estimates, because of the way DirecTV adjusts the bandwidth of channels depending on what they are showing etc. it can effect how much you can record. For example if you record nothing but fast moving sports like hockey, football, basketball it will hold less than if you are recording a bunch of stuff like CNN or Fox News where there isn't as much moving around all the time.

The DVR will warn you when you are getting low on space, and there is a % free reading at the bottom of the page when you are looking at the recordings. If you start running out of space watch some stuff and delete it. Are you leaving the country or something for 6 months that you are so worried about running out of space? If that is the case they you may want to think about getting an external hard drive, with those you could add a ton of space so you don't have to worry about it.
HR24, no external drive. I don't watch or record SD material.

Watch the Episode and then Delete it.

Option number 2, Set the Keep at Most to 5 and let it delete the oldest one when it records number 6.

There is no point in keeping a serial show like that for future viewing.

Be sure you know that the DVR is meant to let you watch it when you have time. It is not meant to store things forever. If the receiver dies all of your recordings are gone.

Extend them both by one hour.

This will take up 3 hours of space total for both recordings. Meaning you will no longer be able to keep 24 episodes of 10 one hour long shows, instead you will only be able to keep 24 episodes of 9 hour long shows (2 of which are The Good Wife, and The Mentalist). So you will be able to record 7 other one hour shows, or 6 other one hour shows, and 2 other half hour shows, or five other one hour shows and 4 other half hour shows, etc.

You really are making this more difficult than it needs to be. Just set all the shows you want to record, and if you see that you are running out of space start watching some of them. There have to be some shows that you watch that aren't really serialized, so you don't have to binge watch them all.

Sportsman doesnt seem to understand the padding aspect of this whole thread....

Here is a diagram:

[--------------SHOW 1------------][------1 hour extension-------]
[------------SHOW 2----------- ][------1 hour extension---------]

[----------------1 hour-------------][------------1 hour--------------][---------1 hour-------------------] for a total of 3 hours

Since this is on the same channel, the middle hour is shared between both recordings soi it really only records 3 hours...

What isnt making any sense is it sounds like you intend to never watch any television whatsoever from Sept to May but save everything and only watch tv from May to Sept....

Those shows never run long, they are each 1 hour scripted shows....but they may start late, meaning they will also end late, add the 1 hour later to both shows, since they are back to back shows, it only takes 3 hours of space to record both shows. I gave you an extremely easy to understand diagram. I guess I'm done as well as this is too frustrating... :bang
