Is this an actual TV Remote
    or
A new DirecTV remote ? If DirecTV what is the model number on it ?

It sounds like your TV is a 4k with HDR.
It seems like the signal from the new remote is switching to HR Mode.
If you have HDR ON and are not sending it a signal that has HDR, the Screen will in lots of cases turn very dark.

Does this new remote have a button labeled HDR ?
If yes, it might switch it ON and OFF.

If not, you will have to go into the menu and see if it has HDR turned on.
Sorry but I can not help with this step since my TV is a Samsung.

this is not a 4k tv just a regular old HD TV, that why i thought I would have no problems just getting a new remote

Is this new remote a Proscan or a Proscan equivalent ?
What is the model number of the Proscan TV ?

If you turn on the TV with the old remote and then use the new remote to change channels, etc. does it get dark then ?

Another thing you can look for,
my TV has an Echo setting. It tries to adjust the screen brightness depending on the light in the room.
I turned that feature to OFF and stopped it from changing.

Awfully hard to do this without having hands and eyes on the equipment. Especially with sets we don't have. What's the "Echo" feature on our Sammys?

On my set, go to Settings, System, then Eco Solution.

Got it. Checked one of my sets and saw the Eco thing. Shows you how much time I spend in the sets' menus.
