Thanks. It ran for about 10 hours before I had to do a hard reboot. As far as checking the integrity of the HDD, Gparted says that my sda1 is a linux-swap partition, the sda2 is an xfs file system and the sda3 is an unknown filesystem. I couldn't check sda2-- gparted terminal directed me to xfs_repair(8) "if necessary". sda3 couldn't be checked either since it didn't have a filesystem. I'm a complete novice with linux. The extent of what I know can be found on page one of this thread.... although I always seem to have to add "sudo" to these commands, as the gparted terminal does not want to allow me access without it. I appreciate the help though, it pointed me in the right direction. At this point I think I just need to figure out how to undo the formatting and let the HR24 DVR do a fresh reformat. It's a new Seagate Skyhawk 2TB, which is what the Seagate rep recommended to me as a replacement for the Pipeline that I currently have. Cheers!

you could mount second partition with third as rt extension type and run XFS utility for integritity check

Thanks---- Yes I had some difficulty in the whole disk evaluation process-- due mostly to my lack of ability with the Linux OS and I think I managed to make things worse.... So I finally just deleted the existing partitions with GParted and transferred the disk back to the HR24 for a fresh reformat. I then recorded a token show for several minutes and then asked the HR24 to "reset everything". I cannot explain why, but all that seemed to work. I went from a 95% full 1TB drive to a 52% full 2TB drive in about 5 hours. I used a semi-new version 0.23.0-1 version of GParted and had to start off with sudo su to get to the home directory. I used a new Seagate product called "Skyhawk". One week later and everything still appears to be working fine. I personally don't watch much TV, but I have an entire family that'll let me know if anything is wrong with their archived shows Thanks again to everyone that has contributed and to those that reached out to help me. Keep up the good work. I did manage to come across a thread that claimed that they were able to transfer HDD shows from one DVR unit to another, so if that's a genuine claim, that may be my next move when/if the HR24 finally goes kaput.

did you run xfs utility to verify consistency of you original HR20 HDD ?
do you switch to SU mode before start everything ?
what output you got from first half the process: xfsdump ? how long it's take ?

you can't consult with a doctor if you have stomach problem while expose to him only your belly button :p

WELL "graceful shutdown" the hard drives 3 times now and still getting superblock on my original drive. used xfs_repair -L -r /dev... line and it past the superblock, copied/restored and finished. everything looked good Buttoned everything up (should have done a complete test) and then went to watch a show and the recordings wouldn't play. So the names were there but no data. if I had hair id pull it out. LOL

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

I seem to recall having read something somewhere in these forums that mentioned having to wait for short time (can't recall exactly how long) until after the lights come back on when performing the graceful shutdown before pulling the plug.

It may have been anytime between a fraction of a second up to a little longer. Something along those lines.

(It was supposedly a necessary step to make the original drive usable for the copy process.)

HELP! I know this is a very old thread, but I really need to clone my years old 2TB external drive, as it is showing signs of problems. I hope someone who has experience is still watching this thread. I have read this thread in it's entirety, along with other things I have found on line. My problem is that when I boot gparted 0.4.6-1 from CD, it takes quite a while to load up, with lots of repeating "buffer error dev sr0" problems, but eventually comes up with a screen with icons at top left, including the "terminal" icon. However I have no keyboard or mouse control whatsoever. I even found an old usb wired Microsoft mouse, but still no joy. How can I get anywhere without being able to start "terminal"?

You could try a newer version of GParted. It looks like 0.30.0-1 is the latest. I haven't tried that version.

Take a look at this. I was told a few months ago that this works.
    I have not tried it.
