It's a long story, but I'll spare you the details and just ask the question: I received an HR20-100 today. I recall reading here that that model was a POS and had been pulled. Is my recollection correct? My inclination is to send it back. Do you agree?

    Thanks for your input.

I think we need some more of the details..

As what did you receive it for? Replacement of an HR10-250?

The only thing you would get other then an HR20-100 is an HR20-700, or one of the HR21's.

They are basically the same, with the same of the ATSC components (which the HR20's have and the HR21's don't)

As for it being a POS... those are the opinions of some...
    But not the general consensous.

Any model can have a defective unit, but No the -100 hasn't been "pulled". In fact the HR20-700 stopped being manufactured [the line changed over to the HR21] while the HR20-100 was still being manufactured.

I have 2 HR20-100 receivers. They have both been fantastic and reliable. I've had one for about a year and the other for about 6 months.

In my mind you are lucky. I tried like crazy to get an HR20 and after being promised one had to turn away a delivery of an HR21. I contacted Customer Retention and they flat told me that if I wanted an HR20 to go an buy at Best Buy or eBay since they can not deliver one.

Well if you need to get to work, all you really care is "will it get me there".
A working DVR is better than one that doesn't, whether it's a -700 or -100.

True but is there a hard number or even a good guess as to the number of working -700s vs -100s? I honestly dont know if one works better than the other, so that could be the only possible reason for liking one over the other.

Suffice it to say there are a huge number of HR20-100's out there. If there was a widespread general reliability problem, you would've read about that here. Instead, what you hear about are the much less widespread "problem units," a great many of which are refurbs, both -700's and -100's.

There's no question that there is room for improvement in the "re-manufacturing process," whatever that means. The number of people who report receiving multiple bad refurbs proves that. On the other hand, not all those reports are entirely accurate either, because a bad receiver wasn't always the cause of the problem to begin with.

What you can say about the situation is that from the customer's point-of-view, if you get or have a bad receiver, it won't really cost you anything to get a good receiver except sometimes an inordinate amount of your time, and you will get one, but just maybe not the first go-round.

Because of the refurb situation, when I acquired three HR20-700's, I paid a little more in the end, after DirecTV credits, to buy them all new-in-box from BB and CC. Their reliability has been flawless. If they'd have been -100's, I'd expect the same outcome, but if I did that a thousand times with either model, I'm sure a bad one could've turned up.
