My father was one of the unlucky ones that got "upgraded" to the new gui. He absolutely hates it.

Is there a way to revert to the old GUI?

    same old fashion way:
    1. watch www.redh.com/dtv for your model's old FW version
    2. reboot
    3. press on remote 0 2 4 6 8
    4. check screen( at right top corner) what version is taking
    5. wait 15 min to finish

    Choices-
    1.Learn to work with it
    2. Cancel your Service and move on

You have to have patience, we've been thru this before and it took months to get the UI stabilized. Yeah, it's a PITA, no doubt. But what are you gonna do? Patience...

Just to be completely clear, you can't avoid it. If you are able somehow to go back to an older version that will at most be only temporary. And it is recommended not to try to back up (it can result in other problems, like loss of recordings or series links).

there is a "method" to keep old version:
    • while you are watching, do not allow to accept new FW
    • turn off the STB when not watching or just cut power of PI
    • reboot it when you see it's begin a process of taking new FW

Mr. Smith's advice is terrible. There is no intelligent way to revert, per Carl6 and the other fellows' advice.

Keeping your DVR unplugged when you aren't actively watching stuff wouldn't be very practical unless you never record anything.

Your statements are ill-advised, based in reality, not a dream world .

well, counting it's your personal vision/opinion, I'm still thinking about what happened at your side ;)
seriously, you should remember how CE started here, all recommendations, etc - nothing new in my steps if you did follow that old CE threads

Okay, enough discussion. Options and arguments have been presented. Let the OP make his/her own informed decision now.

If someone has something truly new to offer, please do. No need to further debate pros and cons of the suggestions that have been made.

    Keep calling Directv and complain.
Write to the office of the president. US snail mail actually does get read.

    Tweet it.

    Go on Facebook.

    But be specific.
A blanket "I don't like it" or "hates it" won't do much.

    Better to state things like
-Font is too small I can't read it
-Or the new playlist format is (you specify your own gripe, but mine is the floating info box)
-Can't set a recording on a specific channel anymore
    etc

Agreed ... DIRECTV cannot fix "I hate it". They can at least work on problems like font sizes, hard to read color mis-matches, broken links from menus to features, etc.

Another option is to swap out to a HR34. That way you are permanently safe from the new guide.

HR34s are junk. Avoid at all costs.

Use a H24 or HR24 to watch the TV and only use the genie as a server(HR44 or HR54). Then you only use the genie when you need to set recordings...
