As JBv notes, the HR44 does in fact support simultaneous IR and RF, but the only remote that will work with it in RF mode is the RC71. You should have gotten the RC71 with the HR44.

I watched the installer unpack the hr44 and there was no remote inside. He unpacked the older remote separately. I questioned him about it and he said that's all how they come. I totally forgot there was a new remote and what it looked like and to be frank I was just excited about the hr44. I think he thought I just wouldn't notice. It took me a bit but I eventually did :) Tricky! Tricky!

I don't use the directv remotes any way but upon learning about the dual rf/ir capability it will come in quite handy. I called him and he said he would get me one when he gets them.

You can if you have an R15 or R16. I do it all the time. Of course, this "advanced" feature was never implemented on the HD DVR's as well as trickplay while browsing the guide being REMOVED and a million other nice things customers liked.

Do you think the HR44 is available for us out in San Marcos, CA?

I would think so. When the the installer calls you on his way over just ask if he has it. If not, just reschedule.
