Caddyshack was on Golf channel HD, went to PIP, put Caddyshack up via the Roku and couldn't tell them apart. Guess I'm getting used to how good my blu-ray player makes regular DVD's look. I couldn't be happier with the PQ Roku produces.

Oh, but I've been assured by the geniuses at HDTV Magazine that what we perceive as 1080/60p on our BD players when playing a "regular" DVD is a figment of my imagination. Can't possibly happen.

I got into it with a couple of their experts on their forum a few months ago and they bashed me for even suggesting that a "regular" DVD could be upscaled by a BD player. GET THIS: ONE OF THEM DIDN'T OWN A BD PLAYER!!!. I haven't participated in that forum since. At least here we can argue our points without being made to sound ridiculous. Well, you know...:)

I do agree with you about the PQ on the ROKU. I keep hitting the INFO button on my 720p Panny plasmas to see if the ROKU is really putting out only 720p. Damn fine picture.

You don't have to upgrade to the new series of Rokus. I called them the other day and they told me that they are working on a software update that will get the older models up to the same (or close) level as the new models.

I haven't seen a movie on NetFlix (all I really use the Rokus for) yet that was in 5.1, but my box has the optical port and the System Check shows that it is set for 5.1. I'd guess that will be part of the upgrade.

Netflix, before their streaming service went down for hours.

That explains a lot. Thought my ROKU had blown a gasket. Finally gave up last night and tried again this morning. Worked fine again.

Makes it hard to figure out what the cause is unless you have multiple sources of NetFlix or whatever you're having the problem with. For instance, that last software update played hell with the Roku boxes and caused mine to reboot every time I accessed NetFlix.

This is all stuff that has to be ironed out, but I can see the future and it ain't cable or satellite TV. Sad to say that, I really like D*, but...

Just ordered my Roku XDS on Amazon, it'll be here tomorrow.

    Couple questions:

When the USB streaming option becomes available, what formats are acceptable?

    MKV? AVI? WMV? MPEG4?

I just need to know, as I have many 720p downloads on my external HD and want to be able to play them over the Roku.

    Thanks

I just ordered the Roku HD XR from Amazon for 59.99 with free shipping(5-8 day delivery). It's one of their Amazon Gold deals. I think there is about 2 hours left on the deal. Link below if you're interested.

And there's supposed to be an update for them this month so that they can do the same things as the newer ones. I gotta call them later. If the update is coming, it's a great deal. The XRs have HDMI, optical out, component out, all the same connections as the newer ones, but I think they are waiting for the HULU+ to come out.

I called them when the new models came out and they said the XRs would be updated so that they would have the same features. Gotta remember to call them today.

Just had a live chat with Roku CSR. The text follows:

    Dhana:
Hello Rich. How may I help you?

    Rich:
I have three Roku XR units. When the new models came out I called Roku support and was told that an update would be issued so that the XRs would have the same ability to stream 1080p as the new models do. When will we get this update?

Dhana:I would like to inform you that it will available later in this fall

    Rich:
And the XRs will have the same capabilities that the new models have?

    Dhana:
Yes XR player will have the capabilities

    Rich:
They have the capability to play streaming 1080p now, don't they?

    Dhana:
Yes it has the capability for 1080P

    Rich:
So, all we are waiting for is NetFlix to start streaming in 1080p and HULU plus to be added to the available channels?

    Dhana:
    Yes you are correct

    Rich:
Thanx, Dhana you've answered my questions.

So, I guess the XRs are ready and waiting for the content to arrive. That's a great buy on Amazon.
