I went onto Directv's website today to buy an AM21. When I went to checkout, there was a $50 service fee added to the price. So instead of $50, it was going to cost me $100. I clicked on the service fee and it said 'Charge based on account status and rating.' At the top of the page it said, 'Sorry! Because of your payment history, we have to add a small fee to any receiver purchase you make today."

I have been on autopay since day 1 over four years ago & have never once had any problem with the bill being paid on time. I called customer service & no one could seem to answer what would cause the fee to show up. The rep said she had never seen that message before. I was able to get the service fee taken off, but still am not sure for what reason it was on there.

Within in the last couple months I dropped from Premier to Ultimate and recently changed the credit card on my autopay. I wouldn't think that would cause the problem.

Has anyone encountered this before or have any ideas? Thanks.

I was going to ask to speak directly to the supervisor. But since I was at work, I didn't want to be on the phone too long. I'm going to call back tonight.

You can buy one from newegg.com for $52.69, using a $5 promo code they show on the page that's good until 2/14 and with free shipping. So if Directv won't budge, it will only cost you an extra $2.69.

They are $59.99 at Solid Signal, and you can get a $10 discount if you join their mailing list.

I called back after work. They never could figure out why it showed a service fee. They said my account was in good standing.

It worked out pretty well though. They ended up just sending me the AM21 for free.

Just for your information in the event that your ota antenna is inadequate or there are issues when you are setting it up, the upgrade service fee to have an ota antenna installed is 99$ plus tax. I just did one within the last month and that's what the lady told me. Aparently she got a genie upgrade prior and was complaining to the tech about a missing subchannel in our area and he told her order one of these. We'll he neglected to tell her it needed a different antenna installed next to her dish. My sup called me and said your not gonna believe this... ota is still a skill set in our system and you got pinned an upgrade to install an antenna (I'm one of four guys left that did these installs when they were popular some years back)

So aparently you can still request a tech to come out and professionally install these. It's just gonna cost ya 150bucks. Ouch..

If it includes a good quality antenna that price is not that bad. I had no idea Directv did antenna installs, I've never heard of that before.

I'm not sure how they can do antenna installs given their mandate not to leave the ladder....you generally would want the antenna on the peak of the roof, not the edge!

How about the edge of the peak... :rotfl:

FWIW, in my market we don't do OTA antenna installs.

Good point, I was thinking of a hip roof. On a gable roof you could reach the edge of the peak, given a long enough ladder!

Peds have your fts search the ota skillset in seibel that will let you know if anyone still has it. My market piloted the am21 rollout when they were looking into potentially dropping local programming. This was like 5yrs ago. It's possible your market didn't do them because your dns.

FYI the antennas are wingard sensar 3s. GS1100 and gs2200. There's a omni one too. I'll have to check my van for the model number. The warehouse code for it was the g2 batwing.

    I carry a 32' on my van and I've only called for a 40 about 10 times in 9yrs.
