I just got a free upgrade to the Genie system. A Genie plus 2 clients. I have 3 DVR's, an hr21, hr23 and hr24 on a SMI 8 and a hr23 in the back tied into the system with ethernet cable for the whole home DVR. I have been thinking it over and cant make up my mind if I am better off with just the Genie and the DVR's getting rid of the 21 keeping the other 2 and not having the client's off the Genie. Can the DVR's work with the Genie as the client's do? If I keep the 2 hr2-- then the installers have to replace the SMI 8 with a 16 but that would be it.

The Genie will work just like any of your other HD DVR's, just that it has 5 tuners vs. 2.

They will work and each box can play back recordings recorded on another one, but nothing works the same with a genie as a client.

A C31 client can control all functions on the Genie. But unlike a HR, it has no function of its own.

Right, it's neither good nor bad, just depends on what you want. The client has no tuners of its own, so uses one from the Genie when on live TV, but as Drucifer says, has access to all Genie menus, such as the history and todo list.

How about the speed of the client, I notice a little lag on the whole home from one HR to another HR and that is only for playback. If I have a mix, say 1 client and 1 hr24, can the client work with the hr24 to set recordings and access recordings? I have a week to make a decision on what I do.

While you cannot record to the HR24 from a client, you can access the playlist

No. Because it is not a client of the HR24. But the client should be able Playback any DVR recording in your Whole Home Network.

The client gets all of it's content from the Genie, and can control the Genie as if you are at the Genie, thus it also gets it's tuner from the Genie and the Genie will have one less tuner to record with while each client is actively being used.

It really all depends on how you want to use your setup, how many recordings you want to be able to handle at one time on a single unit, and how responsive you want the system to be. As an example, to play a recording from an HR24 to a client, it's actually the Genie serving the content to the client, thus all 3 boxes (client, Genie, HR24) are in the mix.

Personally I prefer having independent receivers/DVRs with their own tuners with optimal performance, but many prefer having Trickplay (pause "live" TV) on their non-DVRS and prefer the client/Genie setup. It all depends on your needs/wants, but what's helpful is that the DirecTV architecture allows you to have either or both setups, thus totally customizable.
