I have an HR54/200 in the family room with a C61K-700.... so I can get the one 4K channel using the 61k... (sarcasm).. and the genie itself feeds a long HDMI cable to my Office TV in the other room.

Then I have/had an HR24-100 in my master bedroom. - which just went tits up last night. I'm not going to bother adding an external hard drive at this point, I'm done with it... My kids barely watch DTV, it's just the wife and I, and the single genie should be enough storage. I'm assuming they'll want it back?

Then we have a wireless bridge and a C41W-100 in one room and a C41W-500 in another. (near as I can tell same functionality just different model number).

Lastly I have an HR23-700 in my home theatre.

To be honest, I'm on the fence of keeping DTV. I pay a lot of money for all of these extra receivers and for the most part watch a limited number of channels. I've posted here and am considering the ATT TV service.... plus for me, all wireless. use existing FireTV or AppleTV boxes, etc. Downside... I think smaller number channels, but I'm not sure I'll notice. I think my bill will drop like $100/month and make my life simpler. My other option is to switch to FIOS TV. I have FIOS Internet and adding their TV would also save me around $100/month but I'm used to the DirecTV channels etc. etc......

I was planning to wait until next month or so and see what DirecTV announces when they spin off before making any decisions but the DVR dying on me has me considering short and long term choices. Short term, I would just get rid of the dead DVR and the other one that's still working and shift to a single genie and the clients.

I do subscribe to the device protection plan (stupid.. I know...I can't believe they still advertise device upgrades every 2 years when near as I can tell they haven't put a new device out in like 10 years...) but anyway. If I call, can i have them swap out the dead DVR and the HR23-700 for two wireless genie units without an extended commitment? I'm guessing no... Will they replace the one dead DVR without a commitment? No way I'm signing up for another 24 months to get a wireless client....

And while i'm at it... does functionality just not work or is it somehow my installation? The genie says it's connected to the internet. I can order PPV no problem... But I go to the DTV website and I see this....

    upload_2021-7-25_13-12-45.png

I try and connect them and sends me to a page on how to connect me genie to the internet... Well duh, my genie says it IS connected to the internet.

Should I try and play the discount roulette game and replace my DVR's with wireless clients, avoid the commitment and wait or just switch to ATT TV or FIOS and kiss DTV goodbye... Appreciate all thoughts.

Well, I called into DTV.... 45 min of 'troubleshooting' including having to replug in the box and in the end they still wanted a truck roll to check my device.. I know what's wrong.. it's the hard drive. So I say, I pay for device protection, can't you just swap? She says yes. Then tells Me I'll get a genie mini. I say, wireless, right? She says no, the Genie I have can only support 3 mini's. So now she says, she has to send me the Genie 2 and I'll have to replace my Genie, which means I've now lost ALL of my recordings...

At this point, I'm just done. 20+ years as a DirecTV customer and I'm done. I'm done with the gratuitous billing... $7/ per device. $3/ Whole house fee. $10 DVR fee. $10 HD fee. etc. etc.. $267 a month bill.... Sorry for this becoming a rant.... I'm going to order the ATT TV.. once it's up and running I'll call DirecTv and cancel. Then i can remove the dish... the SWM.... The power connectors. No more DECA.... No more MOCA... ugh.. just enough...

Just use their device on two locations where I want cable channels and my existing streaming boxes everywhere else. Will I miss DTV... I'm sure I will. But they have seemingly done everything possible to drive their customers away.

First you need to decide if you're staying with DIRECTV or not. If you decide you are staying then call the Protection Plan (1-855-422-1614) and tell them what you need. Exchanging like-for-like equipment (Example: HR24 for a HR24) will not trigger a commitment. Exchanging unlike-for-unlike equipment will trigger a commitment. If you're staying with DIRECTV you may also try calling Retention (1-877-999-1083) and see what they can offer. As for your issues with Manage Receivers and Troubleshoot & Resolve those features haven't worked since my DIRECTV account was converted to a AT&T account. Just another fine example of AT&T demonstrating how they excel at turning gold into lead.

She told me they no longer have any HR24-100 to replace like-for-like. And the only thing they can send is the Genie Mini. I said, ok... but I want the wireless genie mini... that's when she said I would have to turn off one of my other mini's or upgrade my HR54 to the Genie 2. Could I use a wired genie mini.. sure. I have the cable the old HR24 plugged into. But I was just kind of frustrated and over it all. If she hadn't made me spend 30 minutes reconnecting everything so she could do zero troubleshooting she didn't already do with me I might not have tipped over. But I had one foot out the door with them already.

You should have called the Protection Plan Monday-Friday during normal business hours. You get a better caliber CSR. The after hours and weekend CSRs are the worse.

I believe you can connect up to eight clients to a Genie.

You can have 8 Mini's connected (hr54)--(HOWEVER) only 3 can be in use at any one time

For those that have had their accounts move from D*TV to AT&T --It seems that Mini's are the only thing being sent out --and NO activation for HR's --THIS MAY be Because the "NEW" investment owners take over in AUGUST 2021 --just a Personal Thought

Thanks! I can’t wait to see where the new management takes things…. I have to think simplifying down to the one or two genies and then investing in ATT. Limit r&d and limit install expenses. PE is not about putting money into companies.

As WestDC says, it looks like the "minis only "policy only applies to people on ATT accounts, so that might change if all the accounts just go back to being directv ones. But who knows?

I’m signed up with ATT Tv and received two of their boxes today. The fact I can have the TV channels I’m used to, the cloud DVR and my streaming apps on one box is just fantastic. It’s really sad that Directv didn’t continue innovating their hardware and software……. Cutting directv tomorrow. Thanks for all the help.

Just curious, how does the ATTTV ui work? What does it look like? Can you post some screen shots? I prefer real screen shots to promos done by AT&T...

Hope that all works well for you. I’ve thought about it in the past but had yet another reason not to. Where I live, I have to stick with DirecTV.

We had horrible weather in SE Wis early this morning as it knocked out power to tens of thousands in our area. Spectrum has no backups on any of their three services here.

Our whole home generator ran from 1:30am to 11:30am today. Our DirecTV was only out for 2 minutes with rain-fade at around 1:35am when the tornadoes hit and we had our OTA as backup, watching for severe weather updates for that short period on local news stations in the basement. To make matters worse since everyone around us lost internet, their was no bandwidth left on local cell towers to stream/pull up weather apps on cell phones- we couldn’t even get Broadcastify for emergency updates on LTE.

And it’s not only me. Had my wife endured not being able to watch her shows today because streaming was down, she would have probably shot me for getting rid of DirecTV had I done that. :(

To be fair, many (if not most) of the images are credited to AT&T.

That said, I'm not sure how much AT&T can doctor up the pictures to make them look different than the actual interface.

Perhaps not obviously, stills tell very little of the story. What is important in a UX is how it all works and that varies widely from platform to platform. It could be the most beautiful work of art but if it moves slowly or isn't particularly intuitive, it is a fail. See more at "all flash, no dash".
