Problem: Me and my family pretty much tune to ABC, which is on channel 13, and for some inexplicable reason, the screen is basically glitching up, while displaying the remnants of the previous channel last tuned. This happens on all my receivers. However, when tuning to another channel, it does not experience that glitch whatsoever.

Question: Would this be an indication that my box is giving up?

I do apologize in advance if this post is not up to par.

What are the model numbers of your DIRECTV receivers and what software version are they currently on?

Perform a System Test on your HR54-200. Also check your HDMI cables and their connections.

Coincidentally, I updated the Genie software to 0x12dc, hoping it would resolve the problem.

    It did not.

Running the System Test shows that everything is ok but I doubt that.

I checked the HDMI cables and unplugged and plugged them back in again on 2 of the receivers, with the third one using component cables to connect to an HDTV.

Does the issue happen on certain channels or all channels?

Here are the channels that are affected (keep in mind, they are not extensive):

    Ch.13(Abc)
    Ch.26(Fox)
    Ch.49(ION)

Check your satellite signal strength. Also, 0x12dc isn't the latest software. My HR54-200 received 0x12dc on 10 December 19. It was updated to 0x12e5 on 28 January 20.

    Huh...

After I posted what was going on, it magically fixed itself.

I guess that effort was all for naught.

You should still check your satellite signal strength.

If it was just those three locals it is possible that D* just had a hiccup at the broadcast center on their end and was working to resolve. Since the D* channel banner was showing crystal clear I didn't think it was your HDMI connection. Still on your HR54 do a run through of your Satellite Test Channels 9501 - 9511 you should see a black screen with the following messages:

    9501: SAT A (101) Odd Txp 13V
    9502: SAT A (101) Even Txp 18V
9504: Correct HD Dish setup. 99 A-Band Odd.
9505: Correct HD Dish setup. 99 A-Band Even.
9506: Correct HD Dish setup. 99 B-Band Odd.
9507: Correct HD Dish setup. 99 B-Band Even.
9508: Correct HD Dish setup. 103 A-Band Odd.
9509: Correct HD Dish setup. 103 A-Band Even.
9510: Correct HD Dish setup. 103 B-Band Odd.
9511: Correct HD Dish setup. 103 B-Band Even.

If you get OSD 771 on any of those channels instead of the messages above then there is an issue. Also like @MysteryMan suggested it wouldn't hurt checking your satellite signal strength.

If everything checks out 100% OK after doing all of that then the most likely issue is D* had an issue at the broadcast center that they were able to resolve.

In the past when I had a local look like that (usually its the KY PBS affiliate) it would display like that then after 30 minutes D* would put up a slide "Do not call us we are aware of the issue and working to resolve" in English and Spanish for about 5 hours lol.

Tune to your Channel that you want to watch I think you said it was Channel 13. Turn your Power on your DIRECTV Receiver OFF then turn it back on to see if that clears up your screen.

I experienced the same issue on my local CBS station last fall. The local station was doing repairs or updating their equipment.
