Satellites do not use Li-ion batteries.

They will get rid of the SD duplicates as soon as they can but it’s been found they have contracts that won’t allow them to do that for another year or two..

What’s a bs station? ATSC 3 isn’t going to bring much local 4K imho. It’s going to bring subscription over the air channels if anything...

ATSC 3 will also let sub channels go HD as well.

Yes, but many of the "antenna networks" are showing old programs that aren't HD anyway, so it would really only matter for the ones showing movies rather than 50s/60s/70s/80s TV.

It may not matter if they don't go 4K. All the networks produce in 1080p60, and downscale to either 720p or 1080i for broadcast. If they broadcast in 1080p60 at 10 or 15 Mbps HEVC, the picture would be pretty damn nice upscaled on a 4K TV. It would probably not be to too easy to tell apart from the "1080p upscaled to 4K" broadcasts we are currently getting on channel 106.

My local CBS/FOX affiliate has two HD channels on the same feed. It wasn't the first or only station to run more than one HD feed.

Unfortunately that is becoming quite common, and will only get worse when they start transitioning to ATSC 3.0 because they'll crowd all the ATSC 1.0 channels into half as many RF channels to free up an RF channel for ATSC 3.0 (i.e. two stations will get together and put all their 1.0 stuff on one RF channel and all their 3.0 stuff on the other RF channel)

The FCC currently doesn't have any rules allowing stations to stop broadcasting in ATSC 1.0, and probably won't until at least the middle of the decade if not longer. I can't imagine how bad ATSC 1.0 PQ will be in a few more years.

It sounds like you do not know what the mission for Spaceway 1 was supposed to be. There is ample reason to replace it, and that is being done. There is inaccurate information or assumptions being made about what it was doing at 139, it had nothing to do with internet backup service.

    That's interesting ...

What was SW1 actually doing at 138.9W for Alaska before it developed its problem?

Wasn't it satellite internet services, since the FCC filed documents never really described SW1's specific function there?

Or did you mean it wasn't an internet "backup service", but the primary active one?

You mean that SW1's Ka band payload was being used as backup capacity for the existing C-band capacity there for telephone service throughout AK?
