    First Post... go me.

I had D* where I worked years back and since I've lived in apartments since, no D* for me.

I want to get it really badly so I've been looking at the website to understand all the packages and pricing.

One problem is that all I watch sports, so the $12 Sports Pack is a must. However it looks like to get all the non-sports pack sports (BTN, all the ESPN's, NFL Net, NHL Net, NBA TV...) I need to get the "Choice Extra" package for $54.99 (when discount runs out).

I know its a long shot, but what if I get the simple Family Package and add Sports Pack (saving a ton of $$) will I get the channels listed above since I paid for nothing but sports?

    Sun Sports 632 635, 665
    TVG – Interactive Horseracing 602
    YES Network 622 658

Also keep in mind that while you may have access to the sports channels outside your region, you will not be able to watch professional sports on these channels. Thats what the sport subs (NFL Sunday Ticket, NBA League Pass) are for.

I'm fully aware of all the above, but just find it odd that I'll get ESPNU, but not ESPN.

I wish there would an all inclusive Sports Pack for like $15.99 or something

ESPN is a very expensive channel, and its owners insist that it should be on the lowest tier of every multi-channel carrier. When the satellite companies created their "family" packages, partly because of pressure from religious groups, they couldn't get ESPN on board.

Another option would be Dish Network's AT100+ (so you can get the local regional sports network), plus the $5.99 Dish Multi-Sport Package. My long list of what you get and don't get with that is here: http://www.carload.com/dishsports.htm The channel list is here: http://www.dishnetwork.com/content/...ew/sports/multi_sports_packages/packages.aspx

Of course, if you switch to Dish you won't have access to the NFL Sunday Ticket which Directv has exclusive right to.

Didnt realize Dish had (nearly) all the RSN's. However as a Yankee fan in NY, no YES Network is not an option. I also see that Dish dosent have NHL Net, Fuel TV, and the MLB package, all musts for me... D* it is.

So if I get the Sports Pack, I will not be able to watch any MLB games outside of my region?

Correct you need to subscribe to MLB Extra Innings. IF you want to sub to the HD games you need to also sub to the MLB Super Fan package.

Generally not, but if you live in an area claimed by multiple teams but you don't currently get to watch them all, then there's a chance that one or more of "your" teams will become available thanks to the sports pack. But if you're not in a fringe area like that, then no.
