Depends. I like a good product price as well as the next guy.

What I won't do is make multiple phone calls and grovel for free or discounted product, or make multiple phone calls under the false guise of switching providers or throw the name Comcast/FIOS etc around ad nauseaum with absolutely no intention of switching just to get discounted product unless I really meant it.

To each their own though. I don't begrudge anyone the deal that they get. Just seems a rather half assed way to operate.

That said D** knows far more about their business than I do.

I have never had NFL ST and I got it added at zero charge to my account.

I also did not threaten to leave, in fact I said that I was very happy with DirecTV and wasn't going to leave over getting or not getting this channel.

I was just very direct, in a nice verbal judo kind of way.

It's not a tactic I use either, but it doesn't help when inquiring about the availability of RZC, the DirecTV rep tells me that's the approach that has to be taken in order to secure it. Yes, she actually mentioned threatening to cancel service. I replied that a) I didn't have any intention of doing so and b) I still have ~ 5 months from adding the HR21. She restated that was how it's done. It's just irksome and hard to understand. If it were unavailable, I'd understand and adapt. It's the cloak-and-dagger BS approach they're taking that's disturbing.

Well, In my case, I totally intended to suspend my DirecTv service for Comcast for the duration of the football season. I had already talked to Comcast about stopping by to pick up a DVR at their office (I already have their internet service). I could not afford to keep both DirecTv and Comcast active at the same time. I wasnt planning to cancel Directv, just suspend my account for the winter. 80% of what I watch is sports, and during football season, I watch college game feeds on my big dish, and Red Zone on cable (which WAS free last season on basic cable with a QAM tuner, so I got to watch it, but this year its on their digital tier and scrambled).

My dad has Sunday Ticket and lives 4 blocks away, so it would be dumb for me to pay for it when I can watch it at his house (which I do if he isnt bowling). Red Zone gives me all I want to see on Sundays. Thats why I went through the trouble of groveling and calling retention.

If they were smart, once football season was started, they would offer the RZC to any sub that wasnt subscribed to ST for the $49 price quoted by someone earlier. Its retarded to make customers want to quit before giving them what they want. In my case, they missed out on $50 I was willing to pay, and almost lost 5 months at $150/mo.

I sent another e-mail stating my local cable affiliate is offering NFL Sunday Ticket in their sports pack and it's looking more enticing to switch. (I'm a jerk, I know, but I'll do what I have to to get RDZ)

Why wouldn't D* just carry it in its sports tier? Other providers are getting a hold of it and adding it to their sports tier or a la carte and not charging $50 for it.
Does the NFL also lose money if the ST subscribers drop?

Nope. DirecTV pays the NFL the same amount regardless. $1 billion a year...

    ok, clear now
but i still think $50 is too much for the channel if it were to go a la carte

I say they charge $299 for Sunday Ticket and $299 for the standalone Red Zone. Have a little fun with it DirecTV. :D

I wrote a lengthy e-mail this morning saying I just can't justify paying even the discounted $180 for one channel but that I have enjoyed my experience with DirecTV. I even offered to pay for RZC. I got a response just now that they've added Red Zone Channel to my account at no charge.

Have you subscribed to ST before? How long have you been a customer? Are you under contract? If so, how many months left?

I am wondering if it is worth me going any further.

I had ST last year and told them I couldn't do it again this year. I have been a customer since last April but in that time I've had three other people become subscribers. I am under contract until next Spring.

I was just honest with them in my e-mail, I didn't try any tricks. I told them that I enjoy my service and the way they have treated me personally. I also offered to pay for RZC saying I don't mind paying for services I deem worth it. I never asked for it for free.

Yea, I tried that approach as well. I didn't specifically say I would pay for it, but I never asked for it for free. Unfortunately I have never had ST and have only been a DTV subscriber since July 2.

Stryker, where and to whom did you send that email? Did you go through the DirecTV website under "contact us"?

I sent an email through the website, but have yet to hear a response. I don't really want RZC for free, though. I understand D* has to justify their huge expenditure to the NFL, but I still don't see why they can't offer RZC a la carte.

I've been a ST subscriber the past two years, but canceled after last football season. They never even had a shot of getting the $300+ from me, but now they have the opportunity to recover $100 or so of those dollars by offering a standalone RZC. It's money they wouldn't have otherwise received. I still think the big NFL fans and gamblers are going to want the full package, not just Red Zone.

I wonder if demand from people who would otherwise not want ST will be enough for D* to make RZC an option. You'd think it would be.

Yes I used the Contact Us option.

For those of us with RZC now, do you think the fantasy alerts will be available or will that only be for full ST subs? Not a big deal, but was wondering.

I would think the alerts and even the mobile app would work.

But who knows. I'm happy to have my RZC!
