I agree. I was an NFL ST subscriber for 12 years, and I actually DID cancel ST (not just hinting that I was considering it). I think they understand that some people have stayed with DTV primarily for ST. When they are finally ready to be done with it, it becomes much more tempting to jump. I could have saved a lot of money with FIOS, as well as getting stand-alone RedZone. DirecTV's excellent customer support (knowledgeable skilled reps, financial concessions, RedZone flexibility, etc.) was one of the two deciding factors for me. The other was Verizon's poor HD DVR, but I would have lived with it were it not for how well DTV treats their customers. In other words, retention got what they wanted: keeping a 13 year subscriber who doesn't constantly nag them for discounts.

I totally understand the football fans here who are wondering why anyone would drop ST. I would have said the same thing for the first 10 years that I had it. But life changes. I still love football, but I enjoy my Sunday a lot more when I do other stuff too (especially when the weather is good). RZ is perfect for me: no commercials, variation of games, Andrew Siciliano's commentary, etc. Those that say it's "just highlights" probably aren't watching it regularly. 90% of it is live... they just jump around when things get boring. Yes, they miss a big play now and then, but I end up seeing a lot more of them than when I watched the game(s) of my choice on ST.

Yeah, that is the impression I got. Because initially I played dumb and asked him about RedZone channel and he said "Yes, we offer it but only as part of an NFLST subscription." After that is when I told him I had heard they were offering it as a stand alone to select customers, and that is when he put me on hold to go check on it.

For what it's worth, my rep told me it was DirecTV's RZ that was added to my account. I don't think they offer the NFL version at all.

I've never seen the non-DTV RedZone channel. How do they compare?

Yeah that is true. I never once threatened to cancel my DTV service entirely. All that I did was say I wanted to cancel NFLST, even after he offered me discounts on it.

    ClutchFans rocks!!! :D

Congrats on getting RZC as a stand alone. I think I will stick with ST. It gives me more control of which games I want to watch.

This is true. But it's still a long-time NFLST sub.

I am curious if someone who only got NFLST for the first time last year will get it.

And for me personally and for others, I am curious if those of us who have either never had NFLST or are too new to have had NFLST can get RZC. I know people are going to automatically say no, and the stories thus far suggest no, but you never know until hundreds of non-NFLST subs call now asking for RZC because "they know of others who are getting it." (You didn't quote the part where I said I wonder if non-NFLST subs can get it)

They're both pretty equal. I'm a little biased but I prefer the DirecTV version. I think Andrew Sciliano (sp?) does a better job than Scott Hanson.

Last season NFL Network replayed NFL RedZone at some horrible hour like 3:00am on Monday morning. I caught a couple of shows and it was pretty much like the RedZone Channel.

Stealth2k who works for directv posted this at avs:

"In regards to the D* Redzone channel... I have not given it out, but it does exist, but only "allowed" to give it out in response to a certain action. Canceling an account is not it."

    edit:
It seems the common thread among the 3 people that got redzone standalone was they all mentioned that they werent interested in ST because they just mostly watch redzone.

Well Directv offers there own version of Redzone? or is it only the NFL's version of Redzone? I'm alittle confused on this one.

It's their own version. Completely independent of the one that is offered on the other providers.

And what hasn't been mentioned, if anyone cares, is the D* version has no commercials, unlike the NFLN version.

Just called Directv to cancel the ST. Told them I was just cutting back on my budget some and was looking to save some money. Told here I'd be interested in the RZC as a stand alone product if they offered it. She had to cancel ST first but after she did she was able to give me the RZC FREE! You can't beat that.

As I said in the other thread, that didn't work for me. I said that and tried to cancel, but it did not trigger any RZC-only offer.

Right it wont work for everyone....just like in the other deals other factors come into play like the csr you get etc.

Im just trying to find a common link for all the people that did get it though & that appears to be the only one.

It didn't trigger anything for me initially either. Once they were about to cancel Sunday Ticket for me, I actually said something about them offering red zone as a stand alone offering. It was only then that they went and talked to a supervisor, and eventually gave it to me. I don't think it's something they are going to offer. You have to basically say I know this exists and I want it.

Skyhill @ avs never mentioned to directv that he knew directv was offering redzone standalone & yet he still got redzone standalone anyway.
