I have had success ripping DVD's and converting them to a format that TVersity can serve out to mediashare. Here is what I did..

    1. Rip DVD (dont include 5.1 audio it wont work) (I use dvdfab)
    2. merge the vobs using vobmerge (http://evilmaster.net/index.php?page=tools) into one vob.
    2. Convert to a mp2 mpg file using ffmpeg and the below command:
    ffmpeg -i combined.vob -target dvd -aspect 16:9 -b 4096k -bufsize 4096k -acodec mp2 -ab 192k converted.mpg

Note: This will only work when ripped with AC-3/1 audio only. If I rip it with AC-3/5.1 audio the movie will not play when served.. If anyone can tell me how to fix this I would appreciate it.

Try using MPEG Streamclip and choose "convert to TS" for DD5.1. It will also combine the VOBs for you, saving a step.

Well I was never able to build a mpg that included a 5.1 audio stream that worked.

The good news is I found a way to convert the ripped 5.1 to a 3-2 stream...
I am using Super to convert the video. I stream copy the video and convert the audio to mp2 stereo.
