Sunday Ticket: $200, ST MAX $300

    The HR34 is interesting, but I am afraid of entering a new contract because that would leave me with no leverage for ST at a reduced price.

    As my sig states, I am only a DTV subscriber for ST, otherwise I would have already shut it down. There is no way I would every pay $300 for ST when I could get the Redzone channel for $5 a month on Uverse.

    But my HR21-700 has been pausing on recorded shows from time to time, although this could be my Esata going and not the box itself. So I am probably going to have to do something soon.

    I also was concerned about extending my contract due to having no leverage for months 13-24 including the 2013 Sunday Ticket, the rep i was talking to told me that the offers presented will be there regardless of whether I am on contract or not. I guess I do believe her because I was able to get the 2011 ticket for free even though I had a year left on my contract. She said it is a good idea to call in from time to time to ask for a "customary account review" to find out what offers are available.

    Has anyone been offered the free ticket without max, then called in successfully to add max? I want Redzone.

    I got free ST with a new 1-year commitment and free RZC.

    Oh and even with that new commitment, I called in several weeks later to complain about Viacom and they gave me $90 in credits and free SHO/STZ/HD Xtra-pack for 6 months, so you can still get offers if under contract.

    Called this morning and got the following deal.

    $20 off my current package for 12 months
    HD Access for free
    2 months of sports pack and premium channels for free
    NFL Sunday Ticket Max for free
    2 HD DVR's for free to replace old units

    Below is the deal I got. Sunday Ticket Max for $47.96 with no extra commitment or months to ride out credits. I will take that in a heartbeat. Very very happy to get that deal.

    Just called. You have to make sure you are in the cancellation department. I asked the first guy if he was retention and he lied and said yes. Took a few more questions before he admitted he wasn't in cancellations. All he offered me was $30 off ST Max. I said no and to transfer me to retention please.

    New guy offered me half-off ST Max. I said no and let him know my local cable provider was offering Red Zone for $49.95 and I was willing to cancel all my services and go back to my local provider. Not a lie, as I have been having major rain fade issues and we miss our local city channel for city council meetings. He put me on hold and came back at half-off price but then with a full credit of the price making it free.

    So I got ST Max at $149 with a $149 credit.

    I said "cancel" at the voicemail prompts. I do not know if I was speaking with a Retention CSR or a regular CSR.

    I was offered free Red Zone with no commitment, or free Sunday Ticket with a one year commitment or Sunday Ticket plus Max for $100 with a one year commitment. Since Max for $100 is available at any time, I accepted the free Sunday Ticket without Max. I will try to negotiate for Max or stand alone Red Zone at a later date.

    I was then transferred to a "verification specialist" who spoke barely understandable English. He placed me on a recorded line and asked me multiple times to declare that I understood I was undertaking a one year commitment with a $10 per month early termination fee.

    After reading the pages of offers in this thread, I made my annual pre ST season phone call.

    I've been with DTV forever, something the CSR in retention noted. So she offered me ST plus Max (I like the short cuts, so Max is a necessity for me), for half price. $24.99 for 6 months is around $150. I mentioned that I was looking to lower my bill, had HBO but wasn't crazy about it. Liked a few of the shows but could live without it. Could she do anything else.

    Offered me $15 off HBO and Sportspak for the next 6 months. This is a $27 monthly charge that will be $12 for the next 6 months. OK, not bad. I mentioned that some people received free ST with a contract extension. She said I didn't have a contract, but would transfer me to cancellations to see if they could offer me other credits/offers. She noted what she offered me, said I would receive that at a minimum, and transferred me to cancellations.

    Long story short, I received a $30 credit for 12 months. in addition to the half prices ST/Max and $15 credit for 6 months.

    She also told me about the Whole Home upgrade, which I went ahead and got for an additional $3 per month. I will receive an additional HD DVR, the cinema connection kit, and installation. No charge for any of the equipment or installation. I liked this upgrade, as it allows you to watch on demand any show in the DTV library. You can also watch shows in any room from a specific DVR. I just went online to get more info on this service, and there is something called Advanced Receiver Service which enables you to receive the On-Demand shows. It is a $20/month charge that I got for $3 per.

    I don't know if I received the greatest deal of all time, but I'm more than satisfied with what I received. Just be polite, they know why you are calling. Ask if there are any credits or promotions that they can offer you to help reduce the monthly bill. They will look up your account and do what they can. After retention, ask if they can please transfer you to cancellations as they have more offers than retention. The retention person even offered to do this for me.

    You don't need to snivel and sound pathetic. Just be straight with them.

    After you reply "cancel" to the prompt, ask the retention CSR if there are any deals that available to help lower your bill. Tell them you like ST but the added cost is tough to deal with and if they can do anything you would really appreciate it. Be honest, corteous, and polite. It goes a long ways, especially considering they deal with a lot of pricks crying and complaining.

    After you get done with retention, ask them if they can transfer you to the cancellation dept. Its your understanding that they have more options that are available.

    When you get there, just be straight with them. They can see you're a long time customer, and should give you some nice credits. Just tell them the same thing, my DTV bill is getting to the point where i have to make some decisions. I like the programming and enjoy having ST, but the cost is really hard on my budget. They should be able to give you at least a $20/mo credit for 6 to 12 months, as well as offering ST for at least half off.

    Keep trying until you get a deal like that. They will make you a good offer, just keep trying.

    Thats what i did. Told them i just couldnt afford it this year,which really i cant.I ended up getting $30 off my bill for 12 months and free ST max with a one year commitment. Im happy.Ive been with DTV since the beginning and dont plan on going anywhere anyway.

    You don't have to get to cancellation. The retention rep made me an offer that ended up knocking about $35 off my bill each month for a year and I said I really wanted something involving ticket if possible and that cancellation dept was able to help me shave some money off last year. He said he could offer it for free, but I would have to do the one year. I said I had no problem committing, but was it ST max? He said no, and I asked if he could throw in RedZone and we would have a deal. So that's what I ended up with straight from retention. We love DirecTV but Cable vision has been lobbying hard to get us back. We have them for internet only, and they keep sending us internet/phone/family cable for $80 a month, guaranteed for two years. Tough to pass up, but Sunday Ticket keeps sealing the deal. Thanks for all the suggestions!

    Nice deal.

    It really depends on who you talk to. Sometimes retention is good enough, other times you need cancellation.

    Bottom line, talk to someone and you should get a decent deal.

    I usually wait until mid-August to call and have been very successful in prior years. Of course, it helps that we buy just about every sports package they sell!

    I ended up being offered 1/2 price on Sunday Ticket Max with no additional contract commitment or free Sunday Ticket Max with a new 1 yr. commitment. Since the penalty for cancellation was also $10/mo for each month remaining the free deal was a no brainer. That was quick and easy, I didn't try for more.

    Isn't that the standard fee, per account, for Whole Home DVR service? $10 for HD, $8 for DVR, and $3 for Whole Home (you get a $1 discount for the package). You probably got it for $3 since you already have HD and DVR service on your account.

    Probably. I don't know and it's a minor thing. The main point is that I received the other stuff and the WHS didn't cost anything for parts and install.

    Check your bills this month. I noticed I was charged the monthly fee for ST and MAX even though I was supposed to get ST free and MAX for $100. A quick call to D* resolved the issue. Still annoying though.

    so I called D* in Idaho.. and I was outright told that you guys are ALL LIARS.. each and every one of you.. and that there is no such deal as "free Sunday ticket".. Hmmm... I was told, do you believe every thing you read on the internet.. .. Uh.. yes.. in this instance, YES..

    I calmly said, transfer me to retention, and I will see.. Okay.. and for the next two minutes , all I hear is the pounding on the keyboard..

    but, Hey Vernon ( my actual inital call person) guess what, free Sunday Ticket..

    thanks guys.. oh and try not to lie so much.. it hurting the Csr's feelings..

    after saying cancel at prompt i ended up with a premium channel csr. asked her if cancellation department had better deals to offer me. she didn't specifically say yes but indicated positively so i asked her to transfer me.

    after some haggling i ended up with the max package for 4 payments of $25 with 1 year contract extension. said my wife lost her job so she gave me $10 off for a year. totally forgot to mention the viacom thing and how i missed 2 weeks of some shows. oh well, good enough.
