Not sure if I went to retention or not, at the prompt I asked to cancel programming ( ie Sunday Ticket) and spoke to only one CSR

If the regular CSR can't or won't give you any deals ask to speak to someone who can

Ask the first rep when your contract expires, that usually has them transferring you to retention.

Yea, i never seem to get transferred to retentions any more and I feel like a jerk trying to ask to get transferred there. So I just talk with whoever answers the phone. I am actually on the phone right now and am not having such great luck.

I would love a deal like that. What did you say to get all of that? Did you get to retentions? I called and went to a normal rep and the guy was pretty much useless, it almost seemed like it was his first day on the job.

I followed KSBills suggestion on p. 8 of saying "terminate service" rather than "cancel" or "cancel service." That prompted another question, I think, asking if I wanted to cancel some programming or my service. I said "terminate service" again. Then I was asked if I was cancelling my service because I was moving. I said "No" and was finally transferred to such a helpful CSR that I'm pretty sure it was retention.

That is what happens when you say cancel twice as well. Then say no to moving and boom you are with Retention.

I have tried both "terminate service" and cancel and neither of them ask additional questions it just goes straight to a rep so I assume it is a normal rep.

After confirming your phone number when it asks why you are calling and you say cancel it goes straight to a rep? What number are you calling?

this just starting happening yesterday evening. 800-531-5000 and 800-DIRECTV. both. so it sucks cause we cant get to retention. i used to go to retention for everything. they are smarter and makes the calls like 10 minutes shorter.

I guess you may have to ask for retention. I made my call on Sunday evening and didnt not have any problems.

Maybe it is based on time of day too? The probably have more people working during the day so it is easier for them to just go straight to a regular CSR. I will try again later tonight and see if I have any better luck.

What was the reason you gave to get to retention?

i actually have had tons of issues with equipment and them having to send out multiple techs. so it has been kind of a pain. i just asked about cost to cancel service and he got me to retention. they at least have notes on all the issues i have had to go through.

Man, I can't get anything good to save my life. They added two $10 discounts for 6 months and dropped ST Max to $38.99 for 6 months, but that's it. They did nothing for me on the Genie upgrade.

EDIT: I just got $5 more off for 3 months, but still nothing on the Genie or anything more on ST. She tried to sell me the protection plan at $8 a month telling me that would get me a free upgrade after two years, but its not really free since in two years you pay almost $200 for the protection plan. I have been with DirecTV for 3 years now and never had to have a tech come out or any equipment break so the PP doesn't seem worth it.

The downside is that with all of this little discounts, I have a bunch of discounts currently on the account (with a couple that I think come off in a month or two) so I doubt that is helping me in trying to get a deal on a Genie upgrade.
