I'm glad you got a deal that made you happy. But I just called D* today and after being a sub since 1998 with NFLST every year ,they wouldn't give me a deal as good as yours. I have never been late paying my bill.
I tried to get transfered to retention but was informed I was still under contract for another 30 days from a HD receiver I added 23 months ago( I didn't know HD receivers were cause for a two yr contract,I thought it was just the HD DVR's ).
I really hate calling and trying to get a deal.
But I'll try again next month . If I don't get a deal for NFLST maybe it's time to looking at cable and Dish options.
No way. Call back and try saying cancel at the voice prompt. If you get asked additional questions and say cancel you will go straight to retention. If you dont get asked additional questions, dont listen to the reps about your 1 month agreement left. Ask for Retention anyway. You will get a deal.
NFL ST with Red Zone free (I don't use streaming or watch short cuts, so neither is a loss to me)
$10 off Total Choice Plus for 12 months
$5 off HBO for 6 months
Free Starz for 6 months

I did say "cancel" . And I also asked the csr to transfer me to retention. The CSR said retention couldn't help me because I was still under contract. At this point I just gave up. I will try again .

The CSR kept trying to help me, at one point saying she was going to get her supervisor. That was about the fourth time on the call that I asked to be transferred to retention. I even said, "I really don't need you to assist me, can you please transfer me to retention?" If you get a CSR, they won't just transfer you, they try to help first.

That's baloney. I had to agree to a 2 year commitment in February when I got my Genie for free, but when I called to get ST I had no issues with my commitment status.
Call back. If you say "cancel" and get transferred to a rep right away you are getting a front line rep. Just ask for Customer Retention. If the front line rep insists on helping you, you just have to give them a reason to get to retention. Tell them you're unhappy with the offers you've been given regarding ST and ask for Customer Retention. If you're a customer in good standing they will try to help you as best they can.
DTV customer since 1999 with NFL ST every year. I have Premier, Whole Home, and MLB EI (which I have never asked for credits on). I have gotten "deals" on ST pretty much every year for the past several years, ever since I discovered this site. I just saw the first $49.99 ST renewal charge on my July statement.
Called today, said "retention" at the first prompt. When CSR came on the line, I told him I was looking to get the ST cost reduced in some way. He didn't ask any questions about why, just looked up my account and offered the following:
$18 credit x 12 months off base package (15 + 3 - not sure what these are for exactly, but he split them out this way)
$5 credit x 6 months for paperless billing (I have been on paperless for years, and am just coming off a 3 month, $5 credit for this)
$10 credit x 6 months for HD fee
$25 credit x 6 months for the premium channels ($5 each Showtime, HBO, etc.)
Total credits $456, which works out to $58 in credits for the first 6 months, then $18 for the next 6 months.
He didn't mention anything about a new commitment, but I think I just entered into a new 2 year commitment in May when I got the free Genie upgrade.
Overall, I'm happy, as I am in essence getting NFL ST Max for free, with an additional $156 in credits. This is a better deal than I got last year, which was 50% off ST Max, and $10 credit x 12 months. That was a bottom line of $27.96 for ST Max.
Just called Directv about the $6.50 cinemax offer, instead the CSR gave me 4 months of Showtime and free Sunday Ticket with 4 months added to my commitment which is fine because I'm not going anywhere. So free football, Dexter, and Homeland for 10 minute call.
Yes yiu can get Free Sunday Ticket Max even if you are under contract . I was given a one year contract in March this year after getting MLB extra innings for 59.00 , 10.00 off a month for 6 months and a 200.00 PrePaid Visa card . I called looking to see if there were any discounts available to me for the Sunday Ticket ( figured there wouldn't be but was looking for 1/2 off ) . Got to retention dept, asked what discounts they had for me and the very nice CSR put me on hold and came back and offered Sunday Ticket Max free and an additional 10.00 off a month for 12 months . No new commitment needed .. So I guess it depends on your account and what rep you get ...
Just got off the phone with directv. My contract was up, and said "cancel" and "cancel" at the menus which got me to the retention department (I think). Just mentioned that I wasn't happy with my price I was paying and asked if they had any promotions for me because I could switch to Dish and get all their offers. The agents name was Cassidy, she was super nice, long story short she gave me:
a $45 discount on my monthly bill (basically 1/2 off) for 1 year
6 months of premium movie channels free
ST max free
and if I was willing to sign a 2 year contract she could get me free equipment upgrade to the Genie with free technician installation.
She also told me a little about how the retention department works, and what they can give you depends on what "level" customer you are with them. She said a few things factor into it, like how long you've been a customer, what package you have, and if you've been paying your bill on time. Anyways, the higher the level you're considered, the more they can offer you and she said when you call, your calls get prioritized by that level as well, meaning shorter hold times for higher customers. She almost exclusively deals with "VIP" level costumers and she has a much larger credit allowance to use to give customers stuff. So thats probably another reason why we see different people getting different offers from them. One more thing worth mentioning, she told me that after my discount falls off after this next year, I would be eligible to call and get another promotion added on even though I'd still be in in the middle of my contract. So you definitely don't have to wait for your contract to end before calling to get promotions like this.
Was reading this thread while on hold to discuss a billing question and decided to go ahead and ask. The CSR told me the ST Max price is normally $59.99 for 5 months but I could get the early renewal deal at $49.99 for 6 months. Once I pointed out that the end cost is the same and he verified the prices/length he had to laugh along with me. Very nice CSR but said there was nothing else he could do.
Well after my deal of a few weeks ago I figured id call again and see what else they had. on top of what I got a couple weeks ago, she said she couldn't do the ST MAX free but only half price (which is what I already have plus other credits) but she could give me a 100 dollar visa card for a one year agreement...big deal, I am already on a 2 year agreement for my genie receiver...so I took it for now...now im down to 50 dollars for ST MAX not counting the bill credits...50 to go.....and I still think ill be able to get free by the end of august.
I called today trying to get a discount. No luck. They did their standard "lie" (they may not consider it to be, but that is what it is) that everyone is paying full price and there are no discounts to be had. I didn't feel like arguing with them. I just cancelled Sunday Ticket. Maybe I'll call back in a few weeks and see if there are any discounts if I add it back.
For what little good it will do, I went to the DirecTV web site and sent customer service an email stating how distasteful I find this whole situation where some customers get big discounts or even free service whereas others are told no discounts are available. In my situation I've been with DirecTV 7+ years, have never been late with a payment, and spend about $150 a month with them each month. One of my friends got ST for free this year for no particular reason. He called in to change his programming and they threw that in for free. Makes no sense to me at all.
You really HAVE to get to retention to get a good deal.
I called today. Couldn't get to retention directly but after the CSR told me the credits he had available for me I just said that I wasn't happy with those discounts and he had no problem transferring me to retentions at my request. I told the lady in retentions the same thing and she got right to work on my account in regards to billing discounts, ST, and a Genie upgrade.
I was not under contract and have been a customer for 5+ yrs. I already had a $10/24 month credit and a $5/12 month credit on my account. She gave me the $15/15 month, $10/24 month (HD), and $6/6 month (Sports) credits along with free ST plus Red Zone. Also got a Genie upgrade with 2 clients plus install for free (I have the protection plan). Very happy!
1st call - Called to inquire about getting RZ added again. Informed CSR that I had it last year. She said she would look on my acct and add it if she sees it. No Dice. So she transfers me to someone else. Not sure it if was retention. Anyway, 2nd CSR comes on and explain to her about get RZ again this year. Puts me on hold and informs me that that was a special 1 time offer last year. Then proceeded to offer me ST Max for 29.99 for months. I said thanks i'll think about it.
2nd call - 20 min later. Called back and stated "terminate service". and was transferred to Retention. I asked when my contract was ending. He confirmed and then asked if I was shopping around and if I was interested in lowering my bill. I mentioned about having RZ last year and looking to get it again. He then offered ST Max for free and $10 credit for 12 months for 1 yr agreement. He then clearly stated that he is in retention dept and has more leverage to offer long time customers special deals. Since my current contract doesn't expire till Nov 2014, this 1 yr agreement (Jul 2013- Jul 2014) falls within my existing contract, so it has no additional extension.
Politely accepted his offer. Logged into my DTV account and show the $10 credit already, and NFL ST MAX upgrades at $0.00. The second call was way to easy.
My contract was up last November (received a free Genie upgrade, client and $20 / month off for a year) so I was not expecting much when calling to cancel the auto renewal of the Sunday Ticket Max. Spoke with a first level customer service rep and politely told her I wanted to cancel and speak with customer retentions. She was very polite about it and did so with no questions asked. Told the retentions lady I wanted to cancel ST Max and to please remove the autopay $50 charge on my credit card. She immediately said no problem and then offered the ST Max for half off (which I accepted a year ago). Told her I mainly only watched the Red Zone station (which is the truth) and she says you can have the ST Max for free for a one year commitment which she confirmed would not extend my contract. I asked if there were any other discounts and she gave me credits similar to what others here got ($15 off for 15 months, $10 off for 6 months, 1/2 off Cinemax (which almost makes it free with the current $6.50 / month promo) for 6 months. The call from start to finish was ten minutes.
Here's what I got!
Free NFL Ticket with Max free
$20 off for 12mo
$15 for 15mo
$10 off for 12mo
$3 off for 3mo. Whole home dvr services
Showtime free for 4mo

I believe the first week is free. you even get max free the first week. Then I plan on calling for a deal. Who were you speaking with, regular customer service or retention? regular hardly do anything but they sometimes can be the nicest people especially the ones from the Utah branch.
Ok, called retention direct and this time they gave me the ST Max package for 4 payments of $36.99 which matches what I got last year. Its essentially half price. I already got several of the credit packages 2 months ago so all in all I'm happy.
I called today and spoke to what the lady told me was customer retention and after telling her I wanted to cancel my ST she said ok give me a few mins. Which she did and never even asked why I wanted to cancel or what D* could do to keep me. So as of now my ST is no more for this year. I kind of like the idea " streatordogs09 " had. Watch the 1st week free and then call and see what happens. After I told her to cancel I wasnt going to change my mind once she did not offer any discounts and went right into cancel mode. Guess she showed me what for !!
My Deal through Retention:
ST Max 4 payments of $36.99 with a one-time $50 credit and an additional six months credit of $15 per month off my statement making my net cost this season...$7.96
Not free, but as close to free as I ever received.
Would be quite happy with that deal !! I have 2 months left on my current contract and I even asked her to verify that hoping she might offer up some kind of break. Nope, not at all just continued on with canceling me out. That’s the luck I have
Customer since 2004.. ST every year .. Bill is $166/mth.. got a free Genie upgrade in May..
Called a couple weeks ago and asked for ST free.. lady said nothing I can do you today.. So I cancelled ST.
Called today asked for the RZC for free and lady said they didn't do that and offered me nothing. Before I hung up I said let me speak to retention. She said are you thinking about cancelling, I said I am now. I said I can either pay you guys $220 to cancel. Or I can pay you $166/mth.
Retention lady came on and said we can give you ST max for free again sir. I've never paid for it EVER. I either get it free or the credits make it free. I said do you guys offer RZC channel for free? She said, yes we do.
She said be doing this a yr will be added to your account. But she said your contract expires in May 2015. So the yr won't be added on.
Had to work a little harder for it this year. 3 total calls, probably 20 total minutes.
