Signed up for DirecTV Nov 09, had NFLST discounts in 2010 and 2011. Never sub to premium channels, always pay on time with auto bill pay, always get NFLST and NHLCI.

2012 got it (NFLST MAX) free with 1 yr committment.

    2013: (Called retentions of course)

1st call this past Monday: no dice, just offered RZ free and a whopping $8/month of credits. I passed. But she made a note in my records (ugh).

2nd call this afternoon: she reads the note and asks about it, I repeat story about looking to lower bills and maybe move to another provider. Says she can't do free per se, but she can do NFLST Max at 50% off for $147.92 and then issue a one-time credit of $147.92, so it ends up free.

Pounced on it and now this is the second consecutive year of totally 100% free NFLST MAX. Gotta love retention CSR roulette. Remember, always have patience and know that you can simply call again and talk to another person.

P.S. This was the only year I threatened cancelling, following a tip from Slickdeals. I won't do it again. I'll stick to my usual sob story about lowering bills and wife (or me) freaking out about the cost of NFL ST.

Yes that is how the calls start. Just tell the rep on the phone that you want the retention department.

I have been reading this forum for years and used your advice and have gotten ST free for many years until last year when I chose not to renew because I am a Season Ticket Holder to the Bengals and I have 7 year old twins that fill my time as well. I thought I would log on to see what everyone was getting this year and saw all the credits and discounts and thought I would take a chance and see what I could get. First call - said "Terminate" - got to a retention rep.

    Got the following offer:

    Free Genie
    3 Free Mini Genies
    Free Install/Cinema
    Free Redzone channel
$20 off my bill for a year
$6.50 off my bill for a year

I was also offered Max Sunday Ticket for half off but declined since I don't use it enough.

Thanks to you guys or I never would have called.

It all boils down to payment history with no late payments, and years of service for eligibility, since that's the first thing they say when you give your phone number on the account, And sometimes saying that price is a factor for not accepting their regular price.

Interesting! We are not moving until October 11th...but I may go ahead and call in the next week or two and schedule my move and maybe go ahead and get ST/MAX from the beginning of the season! Great tip! (I would never call and say I was moving and then not move...not a great thing to have on your account!)

Finally got it done.. Still had the same "direct connect to basic rep" deal as I posted before.. I asked her if I could speak to the retention dept. and she said "Im basically the retention dept" (I already knew from pervious calls that wasn't the case) So I said ok, Im calling because my bill keeps going up and I can't afford it.. She asked if I wanted ST, and I say "It depends, the bill is my issue" So she puts me on hold and comes back with 29.00.. Im like "29.00 for the whole thing or 29.00x6??" She says "Oh yes, 29x6 with a giggle" so I said no thanks, I think I'll just cancel the whole account and live off the antenna for a while.. (I dont recommend that for everyone, but I was pissed.. Been a customer since 2004, auto pay, no late payments, etc..)

So she says hang on and puts me on hold.. Then the actual retention rep answers.. Roger was his name.. (Nice guy) He asked what the problem was and I said I called about Sunday Ticket and my bill getting out of hand and she offered me like 10$ off and Im just tired of it cause my bill used to be 105.00/mo and now it's 147.00 (w/St) so I need to cut the cord and get my bills in order..

He says "I think I can help".. I dont even know what all discounts and credits I got, but I now have all the previous programming I used to (Choice Xtra Classic w/1 HD DVR and 2 regular HD tuners) plus now I get Free ST, Free Showtime for 6 mo., Free Stars for 4 mo., and my bill for the next year is $59.00/mo. total.. I did have to agree to a 1 yr. commitment, but that's fine with me.. I guess when NHL CI comes due I'll just pay the regular price for it, as I really hate having to haggle for this stuff, but in this case Im glad I did, and Im glad I was hot, sweating, and in a foul mood.. (I'd just finished mowing and pruning my yard/landscape) LOL.. Go Skins! RGIII Baby!! :p

I just finished my call. I tried the cancel, cancel reply to the prompts and got a csr, but she didn't say she was in retention. I was offered the same deal as before with an added incentive of $5 off HBO for 6 months. After reading all the "can't have it two years in a row" from others and after getting that line on two calls, and after thinking about an NFL season with no ST, I accepted the offer.

$36.99 for 4 months and $5 HBO for 6 months.

I also have to admit I got some serious monthly discounts when I got my Genie several months ago, which are still in effect. I'll have to deal with the WAF, but what the hell.

I forgot to ask, since this is ST Max (never had before) how do I access it via my iPhone or iPad?

Received ST free last year with a move. Called this year and discussed moving to providers who had better channel and equipment selection (wifi receivers).

Was given credits of 20/mo x 12 (good customer), 10/mo x 12 (HBO), 5/mo x 6 (HD). Also given ST Max at 50% off. No long term commitment.

Just got off the phone with a retention rep after saying cancel at the prompts. Verified that she was retention. I then explained to the lady I was weighing my TV service options because my D* price has gotten too high and that I've stuck with D* for 12 years mainly for ST and that subscription is too much as well. I asked her if she could look into any credits for me (all my credits from last year just expired this month).

She researches for a few minutes and offers me $15 off for 12 months and free HD service for a year as well ($10 off) for a total of $25 off a month for a year bringing my bill down to $81 per month. I said sounds good as she continues to type. As she's typing away she tells me "oh and don't worry about your Sunday Ticket, it's taken care of!" I say "SWEET!, but can I get the red zone channel as well?" she replies "now you're pushing it!", jokingly hahaha. Then says "no problem, Sunday Ticket Max it is, free".

She then asks me how much my Internet bill was and the provider. She offers me a bundle with AT&T Uverse for a savings of $25 a mo. from my current provider with comparable speeds. I bite. As she was setting me up for the AT&T install, she was being so friendly talking about football, relating with me on our hate for the "Donkeys" (broncos) and the "Faiders". She knew a lot about football. And she knew by my email address I was a wrestling fan as well, so we talked about WWE and the SummerSlam PPV this past Sunday. Really cool lady!

HELL OF A DEAL. Free Sunday Ticket MAX in addition to $50 in monthly savings for a year! NO additional commitment. It only took me one phone call! This is why I LOVE DIRECTV!!!

First call has been fruitless. I called today and at the first prompt, said "cancel". Then I was on hold for a few minutes before a rep came on. Not sure if it was retention section or not. So, I explained that my bill has gotten pretty high (have multiple DVR's, Genie, HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, TMC, etc.) and that the cost of the Sunday Ticket is putting my bill out of reach financially. So, he offers to knock the $37.49/6 months down to $29.99/6 months. Essentially, only $48 off. I told him that was still too steep. He looked and saw I have no credits, so he gave me 2 $10/month credits for 6 months even if I didn't want to keep ST. He applied those credits and then asked if I wanted to keep ST, and I said no. So instead of offering any more discount, he took it off my bill and cancelled my ST subscription. WTF? I've been a customer for MANY years (like since mid-90's) and have the Premier package with multiple DVR's.

I've come to the conclusion that I wasn't in the retention section. Anyone know how I wound up with a regular CSR? I wasn't given the 2nd option to say cancel.

Yea, it wasn't retention.. From reading the posts and my personal experience, when you get the actual "retention dept", you either get ST for free outright, or you get credits that cover it's cost.. (Unless your flagged for late payments or something) Retention doest want you to drop ANYTHING, so they go out of their way to keep their retention "rep" prestine, imo..

I left a part out of my post, which was the CSR also cancelling my ST "to help lower my bill".. "That brings it back down to 105.00/month" she says.. I said "uh huh", then she said and we can also work on your channel package as well. I said you mean lowering the bill for the package I have or reducing my channels?? She says something like "you can drop to the basic package for..." That's when I interruped her and said, "Nah, I think I'd like to just close the account and live off the antenna until I can get my bills in order.." And the rest was history..

Okay, now I have to ask, since you smack talked the Broncos, who is your team? Always haters out there when a team is good. There are not a lot of better QB's than Manning.

The automated system does not always send you to retention. The way to tell if you are going to retention is if the automated system asks you additional questions after you say cancel. If it does not, you are NOT going to retention. Just ask for retention when someone answers. If they ask if you are cancelling service, let them know you have other options but want to see if DirecTV can make it worth your while to stay.

Well if you look at my avatar, you should know it's the Chiefs (old AFL Dallas Texans helmet). Manning and the Donks are only getting older. The Chiefs are talented and now we have a real QB and Head Coach. GO CHIEFS!!!

So you claiming the Chiefs will win more games then the Broncos this year? You calling out the Chiefs as the division winner already? I believe I saw Denver was in the top 5 odds as being the SB champ this year and KC was no where in site.

You guys better watch out for that cat that wears that Jersey in my Avatar for he will be doing great things this year.

Well he and my Bills will be better than both the CHEFS and DONKO'S this season!

I don't care what the "experts" think. Never have. No, I'm not calling the Chiefs to win the division just yet. But I do think we will at least be competitive this year and maybe even give you guys a run for your money...

Are Jim Kelly and Andre Reid suiting up this season? Hahaha. However, I do think EJ Manuel is gonna be legit. GO CHIEFS!
