I'm having picture problems, sound breaking up, etc on several channels. I ran the system check this morning. It ran ok, until it reached 84%, where it stopped. Waited several minutes, with no changes. Any suggestions?

What's the percentage of free space on your HR54-700's hard drive?

Rebooted, and re-ran test again. Stopped at 84%.

Have you checked any outside exposed RG Connectors? for weather damage.

Sure, my usual suggestion. New hard drive. Or replace the 54. If you have audio and video breakups it's usually the HDD.

That was my next move. I hate dealing with DTV, but I don't have another choice. Is it possible to replace the HDD. I have some old computer HDD. Can those be used, or just replace the HR54

It would be against your "Equipment Lease Agreement" to open your HR54 and swap the internal hard drive. You can try using a external hard drive. If you have the Protection Plan you can request a service call or have DIRECTV send you a replacement HR54.

You need a brand new drive. You could replace the 54 but you are probably gonna get a replacement with an old HDD in it. D* does not replace old HDDs when they do the refurb thing. They just wipe the content out on the old HDD. So, you get a replacement and it works well for a few months and you're back to having problems again. A new HDD will give you a couple years of good service, more if you don't overload the HDD constantly.

Your 54 is probably okay, I'd go with an external drive on that. That's simple and if it doesn't solve the problem you can return the external equipment easily if you buy it on Amazon. Most of the problems relating to video and audio breakups are caused by the old HDDs, but sticking an new drive on an HR won't solve every problem. I'd try the external drive first.

I'd try just about anything to avoid calling them. Stick an external drive on the 54, see what happens. There's a link in my Signature below about SSDs, you might want to read thru that.

    Sure !
Get an enclosure with eSATA port, add eSATA cable and install your HDD into it

Not all HR54's have the eSATA port. Make sure yours does before you buy a new external HDD for it.
