I was watching reruns of The Office on Tuesday, and I noticed during the SD ads instead of stretch-o-visioning them, TBS had black bars with "tbs HD" on the sides. Anyone know if they stopped stretching everything? Or just their commercials?

I've read posts all over the internet implying that TBS is finally changing their tune on stretch-o-vision... and all I can say is I hope so!

Oh, by the way I'm moving this to TV show talk so everyone can participate.

I saw the bars last night when flipping thru the channels... had to stop since I had never seen them before. About time is all I can say!

Some shows, like the Office, they've been showing in actual HD for a while now. They also show a zoom/crop version of Seinfeld in HD that is not stretched disproportionately.

Recently they did change to the sidebars for commercials... but they still stretch some shows. I noted Friends was stretched last night, for example.

Sounds like progress at TBS, I wish HGTV would wake up and smell the coffee and stop their nauseating stretch-o-vision.

Yes, they use that anamorphic distortion where it's fine at the center but progressively more stretched, as opposed to a fixed distortion. This is what TBS was (is?) also using. I call that "huge-elbow-vision."

You know how women like to ask "does this make me look fat?" when trying on clothes? I think actresses should start asking that about some HD channels and how they show SD content!

It varies; they're still stretching Family Guy to 16:9; it appears the sidebars are only used for commercials.

I've been actively recording TBS-HD since (if memory serves me) last Fall when they started airing Seinfeld in HD and true HD of The Office reruns, not the stretch-o-vision they started with. If forced to choose between keeping TBS-HD or TNT-HD, I'd pick the former, but I'm not a big NBA or NASCAR fan either.

A lot of the shows I have been watching were in HD, don't really pay attention to the commercials -- but I am digging the sidebars.
