It shuts down if it gets too hot .. probably in the 140 (or higher) range.

Although it may not shut down until it reaches the threshold, you need to be aware that higher temperatures can reduce the life of the electronics.

If possible, put some spacers between the DVRs that are stacked.

The spacer idea works like a charm, it reduced the temp of the top box(HR21) in my configuration by 8-9 degrees. My next move had the spacers not worked would have been to install a small cabinet fan to circulate the air, the spacers did the trick and saved me some bucks!:) My Hr20-100's temp is usually about 108° and the HR21-100 slightly higher at 115°.

If you can wing it, you could purchase a small USB fan and plug it into the receiver's USB port (if it's not already in use). I purchased a couple of Thermaltake 3"(?) USB fans (fan speed is adjustable) a while back--they somewhat (every little bit helps!) help cool down the interior of the cabinet where my receiver (and my other A/V equipment) is located in.

I use the little $9 fans from Walmart.

Just wondering; do the USB fans quit when the unit is put into standby?

You tell us as you said you're using them. :)
I would hope they still run as the DVR's hard drive is still running.
