    Did you read that?

"Not everybody is telling the truth." would be a fair statement - one liar would be enough to make that true. But "everybody is not telling the truth" is not a true statement. Only one person needs to tell the truth to prove you wrong! Kind of cynical as well - everyone is a liar?

(And yes, my sister was an English teacher.)

It's curious how cynical we've become. In this case, as with any newly evolved disease, what we know is limited through what science is learning. We do know it makes folks sick, killing some, worse for older folks.

Wearing a mask reduces your likely impact on others as does social distancing. Logically then, you want to be around people who do those things to protect yourself...if you must be around other people. If you can avoid others you can reduce your chance of infection.

Some of what science has learned to date is well described in How the Coronavirus Hacks the Immune System in this week's New Yorker. (You can download a PDF here.) It isn't straightforward yet, but it is clearly a remarkable advance in the disease world from the diseases' point of view. That used to happen more frequently. But since the 1950's in the U.S. we last confronted such a thing in the HIV pandemic. So far we've essentially contained Ebola outside our country.

It's new. It's not the flu. This happens. Seeking to place blame is a foolish waste of time.

Well, between October 15 and November 15 we've had a 71.6% increase in hospitalizations...

...and we haven't even had Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year's Eve.

BTW: We lost Thanksgiving ... and probably Christmas. The families have decided that traveling 50-150 miles into other communities is too likely to help the virus spread. Whether we know we have it or not. And I now know I have extended family who have tested positive.

Daily deaths also continue to climb:

You're posting this like its unexpected. This is what happens with exponentially growing diseases / viruses. SHort of vaccinations / other means of achieving herd immunity, its almost impossible to completely stop this. The best you can do is observe the recomendations of the CDC regarding cleaning your hands and social distancing, and keeping your social circle as tight as you possibly can .

"Expected" or not, the situation is bad.

I "expected" the numbers would get worse as people moved indoors for autumn but I did not expect to be exceeding the spring and summer confirmed case peaks before Thanksgiving. The holiday season is expected to encourage more people to cast aside their safety precautions and expand their bubbles to be with family. Seeing the daily death count jump at the end of October was not one of my expectations. "COVID fatigue" set in and people are not taking the precautions they should.

I also do not plan on turning "expectations" into acceptance. One out of every 1000 people in my county have died this year due to this virus. One out of around 1300 people have died nationwide (so far). That is not OK.

The expectations of the experts was mostly that this fall/winter season would aggravate the situation and it seems they were pretty much right on.

Now with the holidays and people being so hunkered down for so long, that pent up demand for socializing is coming to fruition. In my family, most of whom are in or around the KC area, they will be getting together. It is the biggest reason I’m not going up there this season.

Yes - I acknowledge the pandemic is real. But I don't believe everybody going Chicken Little is going to do anyone any good either.

People being hardheaded or just stupid is probably the biggest issue. Wear masks that offer at least some protection for you and those around you, and keep your distance from others as much as possible.

Just those two things, if practiced by all would really help although by how much is argued ad nauseum in many places. But worst case is it can’t hurt to do so. And I think that if everyone had done this all along that closing down lots of places and hunkering down at home might not have been needed.

No it won't - in fact, I can see the opposite happening. Starting with me.
