Has the audience fragmented to such an extent that there's just not enough of an audience available to support soaps, or do you think people are rejecting the format?

I've never watched Guiding Light but I did record the episode today just so I could see how a soap that's this old would go out ...

I was a huge fan of Santa Barbara, and enjoyed it's run on NBC. I thought NBC canceled it much too early, but the feuds between the creators of the series and the sponsor really killed it.

I was also a very big fan of Another World, but NBC wasn't happy with the ratings and in it's infinite wisdom killed it to bring on Sunset Beach, which got ratings much lower than Another World and was itself quickly put out to ... sea.

I wasn't aware that NBC was thinking of axing DOOL, but I now think the network is a joke in daytime as well as primetime. Must see? Must flee, is more like it.

"Sunset Beach" actually replaced a fluffy morning talk show called "Real Life" in 1997 -- in fact, it was on the NBC schedule with "Another World" for about two and a half years, until "Another World" was canceled in 1999 and replaced by "Passions."

(I used to closed-caption "Sunset Beach." From my perspective, its only redeeming feature was that a couple of the actresses were kinda hot.)

Yeah - I think I got my recollections backwards. When Santa Barbara went off the air it was later replaced with Sunset Beach, and AW with Passions. Both moves for the worse, but such is life!

And I remember being upset in 1984 when "The Match Game/Hollywood Squares Hour" was replaced with "Santa Barbara."

But I've seen old tapes of "MG/HS Hour" since, and it wasn't all that good. :D

You mean you guys watch Soap Operas?

I may have to go around the forum collecting your "Man Cards".

Watched. They took the two I liked off the air!

By the way, my man card was collected long ago. :D

Not by choice. I'm a game show fan.

But I did work as a closed captioner from 1997 to 2005; as part of that job, I regularly captioned "The Young and the Restless," "The Bold and the Beautiful," "As the World Turns," "Sunset Beach," and "Days of Our Lives" at one time or another.

Also, see my note about attractive actresses being the only redeeming feature of "Sunset Beach." :D (Although over that time, the best-looking actress I captioned on any of those soaps was Jordana Brewster on "As the World Turns.")
