Yes, this is all true. Although the situation with regard to the performance and reliability of OTT streaming video keeps getting better every year.

One of the reasons why I wouldn't worry much about recommending my elderly parents to get AT&T TV is because if they do, they'll be getting it with AT&T Fiber, using AT&T's provided (multicast-capable) IP gateway and the official AT&T TV box on each of their TVs, connected to the gateway by ethernet. But, yeah, if you're getting your OTT TV service from a different provider than your broadband service, and then you add on top of that that you're using your own third-party retail devices for everything (modem, router, streaming device), then you'd better know a little something about home networking and internet troubleshooting.

The latest update on the ATV to version 13.1 removed the icons from the home page for TV shows that you watch that used to be displayed at the top of the screen when you had the TV icon selected. You now have click the TV icon and go to another screen to see the shows that you watch. Seems like a minor change but it annoys me now.

Agree, I do. What really bothers me about Hulu is the way it works with my ATVs. Not well.

Have you had any problems turning on your ATV? Since that update hit I can't just click on the touchpad to turn on the ATVs, I have to hold down the top two buttons briefly (hold them down for longer and the box will reboot) and the box comes on. All six of our ATVs are doing this, I hope everybody has this problem.

I tend to use Hulu on my FireTV Cube since it supports 5.1 audio on at least some programs. Not so on the ATV yet.

They disabled power-on from the touchpad because people constantly complained about it. With the remote being symmetrical, people would pick it up and accidentally turn on the TV by clicking the touchpad.

It should power up with the single click of the “Menu” button, which has the raised ring on the button on the ATV 4k remote.

Did not know that. I'll have to give that a try. Did you get one of the new Cubes yet?

First, thank you, I just tried it and it works just as you said it would. Second, how did you find that out? Is there a site I might monitor?

I only have 1 ATV 4K and I use a Harmony Elite there (home theater). I have noticed no change in functionality. Not sure how to translate that to your situation as I don’t use the ATV remote. Not sure how much help that is...:)

I'm gonna wait for the Black Friday sales. I have to see if they made any improvements on the Cubes.

I think we're all gonna see this, it's a change by Apple and should affect each ATV.

What's annoying is not being told this was gonna happen.

Yeah, I don't like that change either. Old way was that the top shelf of the home screen would show you what's in your Up Next queue from inside the TV app without actually opening the TV app. Now the home screen top shelf for the TV app just cycles through promoted series and movies that Apple wants to preview in the hopes that you'll subscribe to those services and/or rent/buy the content from them.

Apple is certainly not in the same category as Roku or Amazon in terms of monetizing their UI but they are creeping a bit in that direction. Sigh.

I’m already on the latest ATV firmware. Perhaps the Harmony was already using the command they switched it to and since I never used the actual ATV remote I never noticed...

It's a new feature. This article has a nice write up on many of the changes:
tvOS 13’s small improvements make for a much better Apple TV experience
