You'll need to set up your own custom channel list (go to: Menu > Settings > Favorite Channels). Set up a list and then select it as your default in the guide. I always use a custom guide and haven't seen a shopping channel in 15 years. I forgot they even existed.

    Agreed.

Except my favorites list only has about 25 channels.

No matter how they did it, it wouldn't please everyone. I would love to be able to map my own channel numbers. Like most, I use my favorites to filter out all the crap that I never would watch, but there are some that are a grey area, I might watch something sometimes, so I include it in my favorites, so I end up with a lot of borderline stuff that I still have to wade through on the guide. If I could order it by my own channel numbers, I wouldn't even feel the need to have a favorites guide, just prioritize all of it and I would be happy. That's all I ask for... just let us assign a number to each network ourselves.

Back in the old days, D* and USSB seemed to change the channel lineup annually. That kept it really nice and organized.

I didn't like it because there was no order.

Like for example my weather channel in SD was 31 on cable, well then in should be 631 in HD not 621.

The HD had no way shape or form of being organized with cable.

What I would like is a Custom list option that I could put the channel where I want it in my favorites list.

Like if I want HBO next to ESPN could do it . Channel number can stay the same, but when it shows up in my guide I would like to be able to list them in my own order. That would make everyone happy.

I just came over from the "Other" satellite provider in the sky, so I am still trying to figure where everthing is. I was with them for over 4 years, so I had my favorite channel number memorized, now my wife and I are constantly looking at hour cheat sheet to find out where the channel is. (it is a learning process) ((but on a side note I have more options now than I did before, so bonus for me !!! ))
So I am sure once I get to know where things are, they WILL do a reorganization as you requested..give me about 1 month.. (I am a slow learner LOL !!!)

Maybe it's time for sports to move to the 1000's. You could even go as far as breaking up the country into regions and giving them their own subset for RSN's (ie East in 1100's, South in 1200's, Mid-West in 1300's, etc..) with all the nationals in the 1000's. Move all the PPV sports to 2000 range (NFL is 2100, MLB is 2200, NBA is 2300, etc.)

I'd even take this one step further and and give the movie channels their own area as well (HBO/Cinemax are in 600's, Showtime/TMC are in 700's, Starz/Encore in 800's, All porn in the 900).
Put News & Information channels at the front of the 200 range leaving plenty of room for additions, Kids would start at the front of 300's and all the general entertainment channels would fall into the 4 and 500 range.
music channels move to the 8000 range
I realize DirecTV won't get rid of the religious and shopping channels so we can put them in the 10,000 range along with PPV and Internationals.

Its hard to used to a new line up. I've had Directv the longest. so its a breeze for me to get back into.

I just came from cable for over a year and I still couldn't get that channel thing down. They were a mess!:)

While user-defined custom numbering may seem like what some of you want, think of what that could do to a csr.

You: "I'm getting pixellation on channel 248"

CSR: "Having trouble with FX Uh? Lets check your signal on 99"

You: "That's not FX, that's my local CBS channel"

    CSR: "Your what?"

Channel numbers need to be identical for everyone

They would be Identical still. But you could have the option to place them in your line up where ever you want. If you want 248 sitting next to 206 then you should have that option. If you want 501 sitting next to 565 I don't think it would be that hard.

I don't see a need. We now have the ability to select and use Favorite Channels, QuickTune, All Cahnnels, Sports Channels, Entertainment + Music Channels, News + Information Channels, Family + Kids Channels, Local Channels, and HDTV Channels.

To be honest, I think channel numbers altogether should be phased out. I wouldn't mind seeing the channels in alphabetical order (like they are on the Android App), and with a new remote, you could just type in the name of the channel.... Better yet, let the users create their own channel order, much like a favorites list. I know a few years ago when I mentioned this, people told me it will never happen because channels pay DirecTV for low channel numbers... But in the smart-search and DVR age, channel numbers are losing their worth.

How is that working out for them?

I know I rarely think about them since they are not with the others. But that might only be a DirecTV issue.

Channel placement is often a part of the carriage agreement. It is not as simple as reordering them at will.

I have almost 100 SL's. I do not want to spend a week rebuilding that.

You shouldn't have to. For example, when Bravo moved our SLs moved also. It's been that way with several other moves since I went HD. I've never had to re-do an SL because the channel number changed.

It must be tied to the broadcaster, not the channel number... e.g. Bravo not ch237. Which makes sense. It gives DIRECTV the freedom wo move channels without having to inform all the subs. For a month or so we were watching Top Chef recordings not realizing Bravo moved. Pretty transparent...of course direct tuning to the channel is a problem when you don't know where it is.
