Rich, looking over what I've got, I have a Thermaltake BlacX dual drive eSata docking station. I think it is this one:

I have quite a few drives, can put one or two in this thing, then follow your instructions.

If I get that far, don't I need to format the drives, or do something so they are compatible with the HR-24 ?

Years ago I called D* to get an HR20-700 replaced, CSR listened to all the things I had done to the HR and came up with this: "What's a 20-700?" That's the seminal moment for me when it comes to D* CSRs. After that I had to think everyone I talked to at D* was gonna come up with something stupid when I called. Then along comes ATT and it gets even worse. Yeah, I can see someone making that connection and assuming HR24 means HR24K in reality.

I can answer your question, I've done the homework. Here's what I've found and where I've ended up: Compare all the providers of cable and satellite and you'll find the best PQ is on D*. Compare the PQ on D* to streaming sites and you'll find D*'s PQ isn't quite as good. Streaming sites usually don't have commercials. Add that to better PQ and we don't watch much of anything on D*. Haven't watched a series in about 3 years on D*. Everything we watch we stream. We don't use a cable replacement service such as Slingbox, PS Vue or D* Now. The way we watch TV we don't need to see a Guide. We watch what we want when we want it if it's available and we never want for interesting shows. We use NetFlix, Amazon Prime and Hulu and a bunch of other sites for content. Been doing it this way for years and it's been a great way to watch TV.

Why do I still have a D* subscription? Sports, specifically the Yankees and Mets and the NFL. Just can't find a way to get sports that works as well as D*. All this is just me, just the way I want to do it, YMMV.

I can tell you this: Try streaming for a couple months, give it a real chance. It takes some time to get used to it. Once you do get used to it you'll see how simple it is compared to cable or satellite. Better equipment, less problems, no goofy CSRs to deal with. No/very few commercials. No commercials means you don't have to pick up the remote again until the show is over. It's just a better way. If I didn't have this obsession with sports I would happily cut the cord...immediately.

I just bought this dock: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001A4HAFS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 dock: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001A4HAFS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Take a look at the small pictures to the left of the big picture and hover over them. One of those pictures shows the eSATA port on the back wall of the dock. I do not see that port in the link you supplied. I would contact the seller of the dock before buying and make sure the dock has that port. Without that port a dock is useless when used with an HR.

I appreciate what both of you wrote.

I think I'm giving up - the HR-24 no longer boots, it comes up with a huge blue error screen, so I'm not going to be able to add a drive to it.
I will just call DTV when I get back, and tell them my box is broken, and let them send me whatever they want. If they want $$, I will cancel.
DTV used to have at least some good people; finding one now is like finding a winning lottery ticket.

I will also check out streaming. I'm not into "sports", and rarely know what I want to watch before I start watching - I go through the guide. I don't watch all that much TV anyway.
    I suppose I could also get u-verse, but that's also AT&T.

You sound like the perfect candidate for streaming.
