It makes sense for a number of reasons. Besides the ones mentioned, the FCC documents for IS31 (DLA2) say that after it is in operation at 95W, G3C will be moved elsewhere, meaning DTV is under the gun to provide another solution for the international channels. IS31 has been at 95W for several weeks now.

I don't see how they can move G3C anytime soon. Neither of the new satellites at 95 (IS30/IS31 aka DLA1/DLA2) have a CONUS beam, so G3C is the only game in town for providing those channels. Mirroring them on 99/103 to avoid the need for a second dish on future installs is one thing, dropping the broadcast from 95W is quite another!

Every single SD receiver in an international install (including all MDUs and commercial accounts) would have to be replaced, as well as every single SD only dish in an international install! They would have had announcements about this last year, and be well underway on carrying it out if G3C was going to move anytime this year.

The only way they could do this quickly would be to somehow crowd them into 101 and further reduce PQ for the MPEG2 SD channels there. Which might not be a bad thing, it would help encourage people with SD gear to upgrade before Directv has to force them in 2019! :D

Tom Speer Analysis of the 3/29/2017 Domestic Data
[Doctor J is off on a well deserved vacation]

    CONUS

Channel 347 OAN/OANHD is in *Test
Channel 387 AWE/AWEHD is in *Test

Masters channels 702 -705 configured, still Offline
MLB channels 719-749 SD / HD configured, still Offline

    LOCAL INTO LOCAL

Three Markets migrated from SW1 to D14
    119 Marquette
    150 Portland
    157 Reno
[In the Analysis sheet, the SW1 channels are removed and D14 channels remapped from *Test to Active]

SW1 has only TPNs 1, 2, 3 and 4 active. Effective with this migration, only TPNs 1 and 2 are still in Domestic service. Only TPNs 2, 3 and 4 are active in Puerto Rico service.

The two remaining Domestic markets on SW1 are Beaumont, TX, on TPN 1 and Amarillo, TX, on TPN 2. The D14 *Test records for these markets have been in “Internal Test Record” status since 10/7/15, so these last two markets have been long prepared for migration.

Another 11 SW1 channels for MLB have been remapped from Slate to Offline.

A Tom Speer quote: “I took a look at the band plan spreadsheet. Even if they leave Amarillo and Beaumont on SW1, the Domestic spectrum is now clear to enable D15 TPNs 5, 6, 7 and 8.”

Portland has been moved back to SW1. When I checked at 11:21 pm EDT Thursday, Portland LIL was back onto two transponders on SW1. DTV has a problem. There are nine HD LIL channels in the Portland DMA. There is only one spot beam transponder on D14 that covers Portland. When they switched everything to D14, they had all nine HD streams on one transponder. That may not have gone well.

Portland remains on SW1 TIDs 40 and 46 Friday morning. TID 46 demonstrates the extreme flexibility of SW1. Before Wednesday, it was carrying LILs for Portland, OR and Marquette, MI. This would indicate to me that they had configured the phased array antenna for that transponder to have two separate beams carrying the same signal. The PIDs for the two markets did not overlap.

Looking at the list of channels, why the heck is Directv carrying Portland's ION channel? I thought that was a virtual in all markets? If they cut it down to 8, they could surely make it fit.

What modulation were they using off D14, 8PSK 2/3? I think that's the highest they use for spot beams, and would provide about 60 Mbps. Surely that's plenty for 8 HD channels?

Though I do wonder, what happens if a couple new full power HD stations come to a market where Directv is already 'full'? SW1 to the rescue, or tell them "too bad"?

D14 TID 19, (TPN 4 frequency) is using, as you say, 8PSK 2/3. They have 8 channels on other transponders, but Portland is the only place I have seen them try 9.

Not everyone gets the national ion feed remapped to the virtual channel. Some markets get their "local" one (you can tell because it has a station ID at the top of the hour and the guide will show the call letters, not ION) while others just get a remap. My market (Boston) has 3 ion stations, all with different programming on the primary channel. ion life is on WPXG 21-1 and qubo is on WDPX 58-1 but we only have WBPX 68-1 ion in SD on Directv. I would like them the add it in HD and WPXG and WDPX since they are full power channels but it doesn't happen. At least add the other two channels, there is always 305 for HD.

Well it is good to see that there's nothing wrong with D14. Still no clue why they left those transponders off for so long, but I'm sure they had their reasons. Maybe they were doing some internal testing of transponder bonding, who knows.

Agreed, glad to see all is apparently good with D14's CONUS beam payload ...

And I guess as discussed before in the past the operation of the S.S. level screens are separate from the SI tables and will require a FW update to register this change. Since the 99(ca) screen on my Genie is still showing the same "N/A" for those 5 CONUS tps. with only 11 total active as before ...

to make FW's registration of tpn (to show up on SS screen) it must precede spooling at least one APG/SI PID_0x0810
it's sort of beacon of each DTV's transponder (Ku, Ka, RB, etc)

Remember the night of the D10 fiasco and they fired up D14 for the first time? We saw first hand transponders on the signal level screen change from N/A to active without any firmware upgrade.

Yeah, I think the firmware update is only needed to tell the receiver about a "new" satellite, but since the firmware already knew about D14 they could bring up its transponders on the fly.

That lack of a firmware update is why the H20s hang when you try to enter the signal strength screens. There is data in the stream for a satellite it doesn't know about (more than one now I guess, with 99cr/103cr) which left it confused. Guess they never tested that, rather than hang it should have simply ignored any information about satellites its firmware wasn't programmed for.

However, if you start up the H20 without a connection until it gives up looking for that initial data download, then connect it, you can view signal strength just fine, because it didn't get the data stream that confused it. I never tested to see what happens if you leave it alone - presumably it will eventually download the data and then the signal strength screen will stop working.

Ok, still trying to understand this ...

So even though the receivers are aware of the 5 tps. recently activated on 99(ca), and can tune to them whenever necessary.

The 99(ca) S.S. level screen is not showing them because (for whatever reason) the SI packets with a PID of 0x0810 being broadcast do not contain the updated information about these tps.?

Many of us see all the new D14 TPNs on the SS display. Tom Speer noticed them the first thing Wednesday morning. Maybe just try initiating another run at the SS menu. They should all be there. No firmware update is needed.

it's two hands handshake - each transponder must send own ID, net#, etc and FW should parse it, accept it and use for different purposes
my point is if FW have all rules to accept new tpn, the tpn must carry that SI PID or it will be not known for STB

Ok, a receiver restart corrected it. I'm seeing them now, but for some reason tp. 10 is very low fluctuating between only 37-42

I was able to see all the D14 transponders by either a restart or rerunning satellite setup on my receivers. I did not see anything below 95 on any of the transponders on Wednesday or today.

    Humm ....

Still getting a low tp. 10 reading here on 99ca. Now fluctuating from the high 30's to low 40's.

I'll wait to see what others report before assuming something is bad on my end though ...
