Several years ago, now, I signed up for the DTV Protection Plan - protect all your DirecTV gear for $7.99 a month.

One of my AM21 Off-air tuners died last week.

DirecTV no longer supports this box, so I am SOL.

    About to cancel.

What is a good OTA tuner with DVR capabilities?

    Dave

And BTW - cancelled my service agreement.

Tivo (separate independent company) makes the Roamio, which is a DVR that will work with OTA, and I believe some cable services. It does not work with DirecTV. It is a high-end, and high quality product, but would be totally independent of your DirecTV system.

As noted, you might be able to find an AM21 separately.

Although if you contact TIVO they are most likely going to try and steer you to their new "Bolt" currently instead of the Roamio.

I had the protection plan because it claimed to protect all my DTV equipment. After a year I found ALL doesn't mean ALL. It just means ALL under a particular account number. However, the web site doesn't say that and after bringing it to their attention it still doesn't say that. I actually considered the total electronics package because the CSR said it would cover everything in PA and VA. Saved some money there. I wonder how it would have dealt with the laptops I carry back and forth.

Of course, but what it really means is ALL equipment under the service address. But if you happen to bring that defective TV from VA to PA on your next trip, DIRECTV doesn't have to know that DIRECTV doesn't belong there.

This! I just ordered and received two AM22's directly from DirecTV a few days ago. 50.00 each shipped 3rd day free. Depending on the agent you get, you may have to let them know to look for an AM22 under "accessories". They told me they didn't have any AM21's either until I mentioned that, and TADA! A LOT cheaper than Solid Signal who wants 150.00 each for them. Crooks they are (Solid Signal), Crooks!

Solid Signal jacked up the price when AM21's were taken off DirecTV's website ordering page, so it's a typical business move to make more money by adjusting prices based on the economics we all learned about- the supply/demand curve.

To the OP, protection plan covers the off-air tuner, I just had several replacements. They even shipped them next day air and the total cost was $0. Some CSR's can find them in the system, some cannot. It's another case of CSR roulette. They are sending out the AM22-P's now, the 21's appear to be all gone.

Well, I've not had any luck finding a CSR who will do so - They all find that the AM21s were no longer supported as of 9/25/2015 and that is the end of the story.

Their ordering screen does not show "AM21" when you try to order one. Try using the term "off-air tuner" with the CSR's, under the "accessories" screen. This screen also includes HDMI cables, etc. The off-air tuner is apparently at the bottom of this particular screen. Perhaps one of the CSR's monitoring this site can confirm that as well. This is the feedback I have received from at least two different CSR's in different call centers.

Does anyone know if the AM22s are an upgraded AM21 or just a relabeled AM21 with a new model number?

As I posted a number of months ago, and probably many times since, DIRECTV long ago completely abandoned OTA support and/or development with respect to their current STBs and their respective add-ons, including the AM21/N/22P, etc. What the future holds is up to anyone's speculation, but if they don't allow for at least some sort of OTA-channel integration or reception, they will be a minority of one with regard to my MVPD options, and likely, after a couple of decades, will finally cause me to move elsewhere for my TV-viewing entertainment options.

    After a couple of decades?

Think OTA broadcasting will still be in existence by then enough to even matter?
