EDITED --

TVG will be doing some HD broadcasting to RSNs. They've gotten a new set and things are beginning to look good for a full HD telecast to the extent more tracks move to HD feeds.

Still receiving TVG (ch. 602) in SD here. And its 16:9 compressed into 4:3 for the actual shows and track feeds.

Sign ... again, as with the recently launched Arirang TV (ch. 2095), I wish DIRECTV would correctly format a 16:9 SD feed by either cropping the picture to 4:3, or better yet display it as 16:9 like with the BYU channel (374).

This anamorphic squeeze of 16:9 into 4:3 is annoying.

Thank you. This post is spot on. People should NOT have to adjust the aspect ratio on their TVs when switching channels. Providers need to make sure it is consistent, but none do. The channels themselves don't care - some local OTA engineers think it can't be done, but I have two true 16:9 SD channels OTA here.

See also:
377 TCT national
403 Univision West
447 Once
And several others.

I think channels have to be MPEG4 to be 16:9 SD, like these:
293 Baby First
365 God TV
374 BYUTV

BTW, do you know what the deal is with Arirang TV? I get it on channel 2095 but do not subscribe to any international programming, unless you count Directv Deportes which has TYC from Argentina.

I am not sure either. I am receiving it with XTRA and I do not subscribe to any international programming. I can only assume it is included in the English base packages?
I have a relative with D* that is also receiving it (they have grandfathered Choice XTRA Classic base package).

Arirang is a P/I channel, it's included in every package.

BYUTV is actually MPEG-2 from 101.

And AFAIK, it's the only 16:9 SD channel from 101 correctly formatted. The rest from there are all squeezed.

Are you sure its not a 4:3 channel that is stretched?

Since CNBW moved into new studios in Hong Kong they've screwed their 4:3 feed. It looks like poorly done reform of 16:9. Not that anything makes Bernie's bearish commentary anymore useful.

No, BYUTV is not stretched;

But the programming does appear to be a 4:3 image zoomed in to fill a 16:9 frame. As the objects in the picture appear quite large and many times the top of the heads of the people focused upon are cut-off.

Getting :backtotop, any idea if/when we'll get TVG in HD? It's a good thing I have a 37-inch TV or I'd have to squint to watch a race in the split screen when there is no HD feed of the race.

What about HRTV as well?

They have an HD studio, HD web feeds, and they have the Churchill tracks and others have HD feeds as well. NO HD TV feed yet.

DirecTV should have HRTV (ch.603). I don't understand, but year after year, DirecTV refuses to add this channel. I think a lot of people who have been longtime DirecTV customers, like myself, have lost their patience with them because they are unable to negotiate with these various channels for carraige. i.e. HRTV, Universal Sports, Comcast Sportsnets, CNN International, BBC World, etc.

Based on that it looks like TVG doesn't have their own HD feed yet, they're just producing programming in HD for the FSN affiliates that air their races.

Universal Sports is available on channel 625.

Comcast SportsNet is its own mess. They almost had a deal for CSN Houston that DirecTV, Comcast, the Rockets along with several other providers agreed to, it fell apart when the Astros demanded more money and now the channel is in bankruptcy to clean up the ownership mess. CSN Philly is having its own share of problems, besides the jacked up rate they want now that terrestrial loophole is closed, they're now trying to get more money out of other providers like FiOS and RCN if they want the games that were previously available OTA. The Trailblazers are upset with the CSN Northwest situation.
