Yeah, but if you read the entire article Fox more or less had to, as they were required to have so many distributors as stipulations to carrying certain content.

The article mentions that come renew time, which hasn't changed from the previous contract, they're prepared to play hardball and probably yank the channel if they don't get want they want. Typical I guess. But, on the other hand, maybe smart as us viewers might become accustomed to it by then and the cries from us will be even worse now that we tasted the goods so to speak.

As I posted in the PAC 12 thread:

Wow. That is a lot more than we usually hear on deals. Also, the right move by all. It is exactly what I told the FS1 people who interviewed me for a "voice of the customer" video. Get on the systems first, then prove your worth and ask for more later.

Works both ways. Fox needed to get on the air to show they have value. On the other hand, tying it to existing contracts is just the way the business works. If they just put all those sports on the existing channels, that is no different than any other channel becoming popular and asking for more.

However, this does slow the sports train down a bit. DirecTV, Dish, et al, have won this round. (Comcast and Verizon basically caved.) That may be precedent setting. Couple it with the failed CSN Houston launch, the PAC 12 not on DirecTV and the line drawn by DirecTV against Viacom, and you get a bit of change of the landscape.

It doesn't change it all in one blow, but it is the first "victory" for cost containment.

I don't think it was a try before you buy deal; it was a I have contract requirements to have 90 million viewers or I'm screwed more than anything else.

They probably had no choice, but rest assured we're not too far off from seeing this thing get embroiled in a full-on fight, with the channels yanked. And frankly, now that the channel is on the air (and if it's good) they put themselves in an even better negotiating position.

Since Golf Channel (218) and NBCSN (220) are both NBC networks, wouldn't it have made more sense to have them next to each other on the dial, instead of being separated by a Fox channel?

I think the alts for those channels are being moved, but I don't believe anyone has said where. I wouldn't be surprised to see some of them move into the 220's somewhere with the junk shopping/ paid programing moving somewhere else.

Glad DirecTV decided to pick up FOX1, but I hope they don't foolishly place the new channel into the sports package since it's just going to be Speed Channel rebranded I think.

It's bad enough that we're still paying extra for HD and the HD extra pack. I've been with DTV for over 6 years now, but the nickel and dime tactics are getting old.

No need for me to even state that they really better have SEC Network on day one. ROLL TIDE!

Also MLB / NHL Alt (214, where MAVTV is apparently going).

One possible solution would be to use subchannels (e.g. 220-1 for NBCSN Alt), but that would make the channels inaccessible on older receivers that don't support subchannels. I'm not sure the 220's are an option, since the channels there pay DirecTV to be carried and want the exposure they get by having low channel numbers.

The channels go live at 6am.

Not sure if DirecTV will do the channel number move exactly at that moment ... but FS 1 is advertising a 6am start time.

Good. Force people to upgrade in anyway possible. Gotta get that old crap out of there. SD needs to have the fee, not HD!

Since there will be a couple more open slots in the low 600's, how about a revised list of what it might look like, with maybe some new channels.
