Well I called DTV --> I'm taking a HR54 and one C61 for the 4K TV. So I'm looking the HR34 and one HR24. We will see how it goes! Thanks for all the input.

It sounds like a choice. Minis provide an output with no tuner so they place a demand on the rest of the system. They must get their content from somewhere. If a mini is going to a location that doesn't watch live TV then perhaps the loss of a tuner isn't a problem. Or one can mitigate that loss by adding tuners elsewhere (DVRs since one can only have one Genie).

As long as one is mitigating the "loss" of a tuner there seems to be more positives than negatives to getting a mini over a regular receiver. But it is a choice.

Minis don't create any demand that any other type of client can't and doesn't create as well.

And there is no loss of tuner. Ever. That's the most annoying and false argument people make. If you only need five tuners for your entire system based on what you watch having a mini doesn't magically make the useable tuners in your home four. No matter how much people want to claim that. People need to look at total tuners they may ever need in the entire system and build based on that.

I can make an argument that a client actually allows you more tuners to use and is more versatile than having a h2x!

Ever go to a TV and a message comes on saying ALL Receivers in USE ? (Genie is Recording multi shows etc.)
With a HR-24 in addition to the Genie that problem disappears.
With mini's you are sunk. That is one reason why I don't like mini's.

Nope. I never have that issue. But I know how it can happen but if you record everything you watch you would never have that issue.

And that isn't something caused by a mini. And that doesn't keep a mini from watching tv either.

You are arguing to design your system based on how much tv you watch and record now. That's fine and great and what you should do. That doesn't mean minis aren't perfect and better than a h2x or even hr2xs for the vast majority.

How many things do you ever record at one one? That's how Many tuners you need. Get there with a genie and if necessary more dvrs. After that up to 3 minis are absolutely better than any more DVRs or non DVRs even. Hence my suggestion to the op.

Are you assuming that five tuners is all a system will ever need? Nobody claimed that a mini reduces the number of usable tuners system wide to four (that can be your false claim). But it does consume one of the five leaving only four for the rest of the home. And as mentioned in my last post, one needs to compensate for the lack of a tuner in a mini by providing enough tuners elsewhere for the entire system's need.

Or face the "no tuner available" error.

Minis are a great way to start a DirecTV system, after all they are free as part of the introductory offer. However for existing customers who already have HDDVRs, in makes absolutely no sense to swap an HDDVR with a mini!

There is also a lag between a mini and a receiver that has its own tuner. If you have the same live program on in two different rooms, the mini will be several seconds behind a receiver.

I don't have minis, but that's mostly because I had HR2x DVRs. When I upgraded one of them to a Genie, there wasn't much sense in trading in a DVR for a mini. At that time, I replaced a standard def D12, but opted to use a free upgrade (from the Protection Plan) to get a H24.

Just wanted to post an update. The installer was out today to do the update. I ended up calling DTV and changing the order to the genie and one 4K genie mini.

So I had an HR54 installed and returned the HR34. And had a single C61K installed and returned one H24. I kept borh of my HR24s in addition to the remainder of the H24 and H25 receivers. Thank you all for the advice.

He also removed my SWM16 and installed a reverse band LNB. It's a 3D2RBLNB-01. 21 tuners through a single wire....that kind of blew me away and I thought for sure the installer was messing something up. But it works perfect for my 15 tuners....at least so far.

Thanks for the update. It's good to know they're installing that LNB where they know there will be more than 13 tuners.
