Sure, EPG data must have additional info to open the ch776 MTVH.

A3 - with such small 'population' it will be hard to deduct it's meaning ...
Checking ch19900/19901 (4cbc/4cbb) I see those channels has LName as a phrase pointing to Starz! [free or Premium], doesn't look correct for ETC11 channel (it's E* close circuit TV) while it could be on INFO.

Thanks! I'm also wondering if us now having 9 channels per TP on both 72.7 18 & 27, when space is still available on other 72.7 TP's carrying lesser loads (some much less), is any future indicator of Dish's plans to go with a 9 per TP configuration as a more standard protocol? I guess that's anyone's guess at this point?

They still have a couple of transponders with 10 ... but I expect we will see them settle back to 8 after all of the shuffling.

They are both test channels ... perhaps DISH is still deciding IF they want to use the new "popup text" on public channels?

The names on the channels doesn't bother me. Test channels can be called anything.

Yeah, those are still troubling me a bit -- particularly the low EA bitrates on MGM HD as a result (which happens to be one of my favorite HD movie channels). I was just concerned today with what seemed to be a conscious choice to stick with 9 channels on 18 & 27 when space *appeared* to be available elsewhere. Then again, I don't know what kind of technical/power considerations they have to deal with behind the scenes, or any other future plans they're kicking around.

In the end, I believe your prediction will be correct. I truly hope it is! :)

Channels ECCxxx seen as a carrier of internal classes, seminars, etc - I wouldn't name it as a test channel.
BTW, I see FREE! [349] changed 8C also, perhaps they begin using it somehow in latest version of FW.

ECC one channel (9996) for EchoStar Communications ...
(For some reason ECC is "available" on 61.5 but in test on 129?)
They also have 999 RTLR available for retailer information training (not in test).

ETC on four channels for EchoStar Technology - two "available", two "test".

Since the last channel got 8C that descriptor has been changing along with the normal "Free"/"Preview" field we use. When a channel is in preview the list of channel groups goes away. When a channel is not in preview the list is restored. If that pattern breaks it might make tracking previews more interesting (and tracking 8C more worthwhile).

The thing is...that I do get the balancing act that Dish has to face. That is, lower bitrates obviously yield smaller datastreams, which means more movies being able to fit on the DVR. As a result, I'm sure they have to cater to folks who see that as a major plus. That, and the obvious transponder space it buys them.

On the other hand, even with the already down-rezzed signal, the latest encoders and a VBR scheme, 8 really should be the *absolute* limit if things like motion and complex scenes are to still have some semblance of integrity when the going gets tougher -- both in sports AND movies. Anything more, and we're starting to get into U-Verse territory for bitrates and PQ at times. That is, increased bandwidth (obviously along with resolution), and the benefits that come with it, is one of the things that makes HD feel like......well, HD.

But...I realize it's beating a dead horse at this point. We'll just have to see how it all plays out, so I'll leave it at that.

    (for now)

You're right ... this one moved between "available" and "unavailable" - misspoke when I said between regular and "free"/"preview".

It is a shift similar to other channels that leave "available" status. The three words there are are common to "not available" channels under the old definition.

I'd say the transponder space is more critical ... they can always upgrade DVRs (for a price) and external storage is now free on the DVRs so storage space is endless (just swap in and out the storage drives for the content you want).

I try not to get too hung up on a specific number of channels. I understand that an arbitrary number isn't what makes a channel look good or bad. Many years ago DISH put 12 SD channels on a transponder ... and occasionally 13. With MPEG4 that arbitrary number is easily forgotten. But 9 makes me wince.

If I had better equipment I'd run though all the transponders and look at bit rates and resolution. I suspect there is a lot of balancing going on. Then again ... ignorance is occasionally bliss. As long as the picture look good I'm not sure I want to know the numbers. :)

BTW: The average OTA bitrate in the US is around 13 Mbps for a HD signal. The minimum 1080i station is 5.7 Mbps (WPTO PBS Cincinatti). I'm not saying that's good ... but that is MPEG2 and "MPEG4" is supposed to be better.

I'd agree that an arbitrary number is not necessarily what one should use as a benchmark for quality. Other factors play into effect, too. How much downrezzing and resizing is going on -- both for HD and SD? Is there any other sort of pre or post processing going on (e.g. edge enhancement on SD channels)? Is any hard "capping" going on? Finally, what else is going on in terms of load demand at a given moment?

Also, I truly believe that the subsequent generations of MPEG-4 encoders are probably going to pay positive dividends. Then again, as noted, I also think that there reaches a point (e.g. 9-10 per TP) where visual compromises have to be made, regardless. In that regard, I also believe 8 per TP combined with the very best VBR encoding and load balancing is probably the maximum they want to go in terms of any bit "spare change" for those complex moments.

As a former video editor, and owner of my own video production business, I'll admit that I tend to be fairly critical and sensitive when it comes to these things. I also try to temper that with realism. I'm not going to expect pristine, Blu-Ray quality from any HD DBS provider. I do like to see things look as good as they can though -- given the limitations. A sort of eternal optimism...lol.

Unfortunately, I also think that some OTA markets have shown a decrease in terms of quality over the past couple of years. Mostly due to the whole sub-channel thing. Then again, I really can't complain too much for our local market on most channels. I've seen worse. :)
