I've been with D for quite a long time. And I've had many dvrs and replacements. There is that one monumental task that I really hate. RESTORING ALL MY SERIES LINKS. That number is just under a 100 now and if a failure occured or I wanted to add a larger drive it's back to square one. Now I know that a lot of people rely on the usb for their AM 21. But I would love if there was a menu option for connecting a USB flash drive for continuos incremental backup and restore of the series links. The current method of restore doesn't allow for channel preference, repeats/new, off season etc. Sorry if this has previously been discussed.

all SL will be copied if you going with a big drive or just will do copy of whole partition from old drive to new one (regardless if you will use new drive in old or new DVR)

I guess I needed to be more specific and left out the drive upgrade. Lets keep it limited to defective unit replacements and dvr upgrades.

It is a long standing request, and very valid.

Fios started giving the ability to upload your settings and passes to their cloud to restore them to a new machine. But the storage is only 30 days. You either need to keep storing or know when your system is going to go belly up.

That seems odd that they wouldn't also allow it to be stored on one's own cloud or desktop.

If you have a Genie/client system you can copy the settings

How does one copy or backup settings from a Genie to a USB flash drive?

Do you think we will ever be able to backup our recordings too, so that they may be transferred to replacement or upgraded HD-DVR?

never - they just don't care about your concerns with lost recordings

Never say never, but I won't bet on it happening, either.

There's no grounds for saying what DIRECTV cares about and what they don't care about....

I'd like to be able to backup my settings etc to a flash drive or elsewhere but we have to be careful what we wish for. Look at how long it took for the coders to fix the 'double play' buffer update. Or how about the HDGUI update that did very little other than change the color scheme, cause trouble with the 'SD' outputs and cause trouble for 6 months.

Backing up settings seems to be a simple thing but in DVRs that are already bogged down I wonder what price we'd have to pay for a 'backup' option.

I'd prefer a more conservative approach - get the code working and then leave it alone would be my preference.

Following that logic, we'd be on DOS 1.0, Ford Model T, and the Bowmar Brain.

You can't. you can copy settings between the Genie and clients

I'm talking about the DVRs as they are today.... Get the current code debugged and then leave it alone or at least allow subscribers decided if they want to 'upgrade' to new features rather than forcing everything the marketing department can think of on everyone.
