Anyone planning on trying to see this event on Tuesday? I just got my viewer in the mail today, also going to use it to check out larger sunspots and the big total eclipse coming in a few years.

I was planning on it. I tried to find a <$100 telescope with a sun filter here in town, and could not find anything. Did find a place selling computer driven telescopes for a couple grand, but nothing I can use to watch this. Guess I will be watching with a cardboard box :(

According to NASA, welders glass shade #14 is dark enough. That's what I got, it blocked out everything except the disc itself when I tried it today.

One of the science sites said Venus was so small, you wouldnt see it just using welders glasses without some kind of enlargement. Maybe Ill try using those in front of a pair of binoculars.

I was wondering just how large of a dot it would be.

As much as I would like to bring down the Celestron 8E for this event, I'm thinking it would be more trouble then it's worth as I'll have 5 kids (<9) at the house that day.

The last time I did a viewing for the kids, I spent more time listening to whining & "let me see" and having to realign the scope (even though it is computer driven) as they would either kick the leg or bump it..

Venus, goddess of love that you are
    Surely the things I ask
Can't be too great a task

    Venus if you do
I promise that I always will be true
I'll give her all the love I have to give
As long as we both shall live

    Hey, Venus
    Oh, Venus
    Make my wish come true

Well, I wanted one for a long time, so today I bought a Canon T3 with 18-55mm lens, and an add on 55-250mm IS lens on sale. 250mm should provide decent shots. Now I need to find a filter for the lens before Tuesday. They didnt have any solar lens in stock.

I'll have my scope up at the NLR airport if it isn't too cloudy to see. DM me if you are interested in meeting up.

This just sucks, Accuweather is calling for a 75% chance for rain around here on Tuesday. :(

With most of the reservoirs below full pool (no where near 2008-2009 levels) and the fact there has not been all that many storms of the gulf, the state likes to say we are. Downside with a 75% chance is skies can look threatening all day & ruining such events as this and you still don't get a drop of rain.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you as sadly, your forecast isn't looking much better.

We're projecting partly cloudy this evening, so we'll see what we see from the observatory on top of the university's science building. If that doesn't work they've got streams from other telescopes projecting in the planetarium downstairs.

My oldest will be thrilled, I think.

Been raining on and off all day and had a few moments of hope from what I can see out the window right now, I'll have to watch it online.

It's on the edge still, but I definitely saw it through my welders glass. Will need to look again when it's further in.

The fact that this is only the eighth transit since the invention of the telescope really says something.

Got some shots between clouds before the sun went to the trees - hopefully they'll be good enough to post later. Even wifey said she was impressed!
