This sucks. I'm a Wings fan and will miss their opener in Europe if the contract isn't worked out.

I count 9 Detroit games on VS. (2009-10 Versus NHL Schedule)

I'm an NHL CI subscriber and they are going to start that first installment very soon. Here's my question:

Anyone ever cancel a sports package before the season starts and received a full refund after they've been charged the first installment?

I'd like to think I have a month to wait it out before I consider a FiOS TV switch. (Funny that I said I wouldn't consider switching in another thread.) FiOS only charges $79 for NHL CI. Am I missing something?

The quote from the DirecTV PR guy makes me a little concerned. But hey, he's a PR guy so I'm not placing any bets on what he says.

That's exactly what Comcast is hoping for, which is why they're pulling this crap in the first place. After they get enough people to switch to its cable service, then they'll probably offer the channel to Directv at a reasonable rate. Or they will go the way of CSN NW and CSN Philladelphia and avoid satellite altogether.

Btw, I'm reading that people who are complaining to D* about Versus going away are getting three months of free Showtime.

Yes I got three month of Showtime, which is nice but as I said to the CSR that hardly makes up for the loss of Versus.

Fortunately it would just be the last 2--Chicagoland is on August 29. And, there's a long break until Motegi on Sept 19, which gives time hopefully to have it worked out.

I am in Michigan and watch a fair amount of hockey. I also like college football. However I almost never watch Versus except during the hockey playoffs. I would really like to get an antenna and watch CBC anyways. My years with Comcast made me hate that company so much. It is one of the reasons I am wilth DTV.

This is amazing that a major channel would be removed just like that from a provider's lineup. Morons, the lot of them.

    This isn't a Major channel. It's 64 out of 71 IIRC.

Well, it's major if you are a hockey fan and don't want to pay the price of Center Ice. Technically....no it isn't ranked as being major.

Directv is claiming that they're already overpaying for this station, and now Versus is asking them to pay more than other service providers. Here's what the Director of Public Relations for Directv is saying in the L.A. Times:

Robert Mercer, director of public relations for DirecTV, said: "Versus' overall ratings are poor and have not increased nearly enough to justify what we're paying them, let alone the significant increase they're asking for.

"It is a significant rate hike and the deal is discriminatory because Versus is not offering the same package options as other distributors."

    http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-versus-directv22-2009aug22,0,4477246.story

According to Nielsen ratings numbers, Versus is averaging 3,000 more viewers at any given time since rebranding itself from the Outdoor Life Network to Versus in 2006-2007. On DirecTV, Versus ranks 61st among 74 English-advertising supported cable networks.

I will be shocked if VS doesn't get a deal done with DirectTV. This is the last thing VS would want to do if it is a growing channel. Any quotes given to the media at this point are just negotiating banter.

VS will be back on Direct-TV - It's not going anywhere.

They work it out, or I drop DTV like a light switch, try to collect, I will go to court, I got money and time to blow.

    Sure hope you're right.

That other point here is interesting about the possibility of the NHL having some kind of "out" clause to transfer the Vs-intented NHL games to CI and/or NHLN.

This is logical thinking for any channel that isn't owned by a cable company, but Comcast happens to own its own cable service. They've been using CSN NW and CSN Philadelphia as leverage to drive customers in those markets to its cable service. And perhaps that's exactly what they are attempting to do now on a national level. I wonder if this could end up in arbitration.

I think you're right about the strategy and because of the Vs issue as well as the CSN Philly feeds, I ain't no Comcast fan :nono2: I've only had 1 cable svc back in the 80's until I got C-Band.
