But he also has to keep the current best interests of the league in sight too. He can't walk out in the street and bash Versus as they are giving the NHL millions of guaranteed money for the TV contract.

I am a Comcast hater, but both Versus/Comcast and DirecTV have been shady in this. Versus wants more money, but doesn't have the ratings to justify it. They used very shady numbers during a free preview to boost their cause (note they are not hollaring about their ratings now). DirecTV hasn't been the most honest about wanting to move Versus to the sports pack.

I still feel that the resolution will come to this situation when the RSNs that Comcast and DirecTV control get carriage in either direction.

Too bad none of that competence was genetic, or Colin Campbell would have a little competence too!

Kind of on topic. The next America's Cup sail off is rapidly approaching in mid-Feb. It's always been on Versus but the last time I checked the TV rights had not been determined yet. Anyone out there know anything on this issue?

I realize the Cup this year is a two team race with two gazillionaires showing off their boy toys but the photos of the tri-marands look fascinating. It could turn out to be an exciting visual event on TV.

The hawks games are available in Chicago only since the nhl wont permit their games to be shown nationwide in the us (although they are shown nationwide in canada as the local wgn feed is available)

OK, D*, what happened? I thought that the RSNs that D* has the rights to that the carriage agreement with Comcast was expiring at midnight on 12/31/2009. I thought you were going to leverage that against settling the VERSUS dispute!! Why not make them pull those channels today???? Get this darn thing settled now!
I WANT MY VERSUS BACK!!!!! Or at least give us a detailed explanation as to what (if anything) is being negotiated.
    BRING BACK VERSUS NOW!!!

You guys are being far too hard on DIRECTV. In these “difficult times” (per DIRECTV), Versus was dropped so they wouldn’t have to pass the additional costs onto the customer. Give them a break, it’s not like they’re raising our rates or anything… (cough, cough) I mean EEEEERRRRRRR…

What would you do if D* dropped the Travel Channel - wouldn't you get upset. I got D* for the NHL and the IRL - it is D* dragging their feet here becuase they are saving millions. It should be a bait and switch fraud by D* - "Yes, subscribe to us for your favoritte channels, commit to a two year agreement, then after you do, we'll delete all of your favorite channel and charge you a huge termination fee if you leave. HA HA HA all the way to the bank!!! We love trapping our customers!!!"

I hope D* gets sued by every state's consumer fraud department.....

i'm a hockey fan. i'm a bike race fan. i'm a race fan (not the contrived league racing however). you would think i would be outraged that versus is not on my directv screen. i'm not. why?

    1. versus's hockey coverage is slightly better than the rsn's coverage of their local team. it seems to me that every 2 minutes, versus throws up some bug promoting one of their crappy programs and while doing so wipes out ALL the graphic information of the game on the screen. the only reason they are desirable is because they cover hockey, not because their coverage is any good. they are the only source on cable nationally (other than the nhl network). personally i am not missing versus in this aspect- the nhln has better coverage of all teams and not just the ones being shown on the channel that night.

    2. bike racing has grown from the tour, to the tour of cali to now a few other tours (prompted by the return of lance armstrong last year). coverage essentially ends after the tour de france. the tour of cali is a week long and i think starts in february. while i really doubt that people are going to cancel en masse because they're missing the tour of california or the giro d'italia (i believe shown for the first time last year in this country) there's still time for versus to come back so you won't miss any of the racing.

    3. the leauge sucks. period. as i have said to you before, you have a metric f-ton of problems to deal with. television viewership should be one of the absolute last things you need to be worried about. try developing a charismatic star people can relate to who actually WINS races. danica patrick ain't one. she is the anna kornikova of the league who has "won" one race, and acts like a bitch to the fans and other drivers. that's not my description of her by the way, thats from multiple people who have been in open wheel racing for some time now. your most notable faces were not born in this country. in fact the league had no american winner for the first time ever, and apparantly this series needs marketable american winners to survive or so i'm told by the indy place fans. no one can relate to your series, and trying to piggyback the history and success of CART/champcar to yours is a major insult to the people you need desperately, the champcar fans (which i am one of). fix your own problems first then worry about tv coverage. make your product watchable then work on television.

speaking of which, don't go blaming versus for your league not getting any ratings. you got no ratings before the versus deal. espn/abc wanted nothing to do with you except for the marion county 497.5. versus was your only dance partner, and your league signed that 10 year albatross knowing that it was in fewer homes than espn prime and in higher costing programming packages.

the only thing that is probably worthwhile that i am/would be missing is the road racing bike coverage, and it isn't even bike season yet plus the main bike race doesn't start for another 5 months. i and a lot of other sports fans didn't watch this channel for any period longer than a few weeks. it would not be missed if it went away and the people who would cancel because versus was dropped would not make that big of a dent in their subscriber numbers. this niche channel deserves to be put in a niche sports programming pack and let people who want it so badly to pay for it.

They very well could be using the three RSNs as leverage against Comcast, but they also have a few CSN regionals they are still carrying that are out of contract, so they have to tread lightly.

I saw something tonight that stopped me in my tracks.

I walked into my living room and saw bull riding on the TV...in HD...with the Versus bug on the screen.

Turns out it was just a segment of HBO's Real Sports. Fooled me for a few seconds.

So, if Comcrap can continue to carry out of contract the RSNs that D* controls, why couldn't D* continue to carry Versus out of contract? No idea what D* is doing here.. I have confirmed that FSN Pittsburgh HD is still on Comcrap in Pittsburgh. C'mon D*... use the leverage that you now have with Comcrap. Either force Comcrap to drop the RSNs that you are in control of that are out of contract with Comcrap or get a deal agreed to so that Comcrap can continue to carry these RSNs and also makes Comcrap agree to allow D* to carry Versus (and CSN Philly too, while we're at it..).

I called and complained to D* last night that I couldn't watch the Blackhawks game that was on Versus last night, and the customer service rep transferred me to retension.Retension gave me NHL centerice for free for the rest of the season($119.00)!I just have to call and cancel so it does'nt auto renew next year.

Wouldn't the Blackhawks be blacked out on NHL CI to Chicago area viewers, though, or is the NHL different from the NFL and MLB where blackouts are concerned?
