I just wish the propaganda on both sides would end and they get a deal done. As a Penguins fan, I guess I could do without the 8 or so regular season Penguins games scheduled on VS. However, the playoffs would cause me a good deal of distress if they are still catfighting.

As an NHL fan, I have to agree with you. As much as I like watching NHL games (also college f'ball), I know that the NHL is in last place among the major pro sports. Wish it were otherwise, but it's still mainly a regional sport even after expanding south. The Stars here in Dallas do ok locally but I agree that Bettman expanded southward more than needed.

One thing appears certain to me...I don't see the NHL being able to do much for their TV fans (MSG HD missing + this Vs issue).

Does anyone know how much DirecTV was paying Comcast to carry Versus per customer and what DISH is paying per customer?

It may be the same rate that they're charging other providers, but those other providers aren't providing Versus to 18 million subscribers. DirecTV quite reasonably expects a discount given the increased quantity. That's generally how business is done.

We know that Versus is only on the AT250 tier on Dish, so there is one huge difference.

While walking to the San Jose Sharks preseason game tonight, starting about three blocks from the HP Pavilion, there were these people standing on every corner wearing Versus T-Shirts handing out these:

This is a front and back scan of two cards. They were saying things over and over like "DirecTV doesn't care about you!" "DirecTV cancelled your Versus channel!"

I thought it was funny and thought I'd share with the group. :D

Thanks for the link. I posted a comment at the article site since there was another poster that "flamed" the NHL hard (the guy was not an NHL fan and from reading his post, doesn't think that anyone else is, due to the lack of posts at that site about the VS dispute.

Here's my post that I made at that site:

Thanks for posting those pics. This sure seems to be the kind of war that's going to drag out a while, given the language used lately. Sad....

They better get a move on. When hockey fans try to see the opening games and realize they can't get them, I am sure many will be jumping ship and DISH phones will be ringing off the hook.

As a long time DirecTV customer, I am getting a little agrivated also. Not only with the Versus issue, but the lack of many major networks (Travel Channel for one) being in HD, that DISH and cable have.

But I know if I jump ship those issues will go away but others will appear. Like last year, less HD with DISH CI package.

I was hopeful when waking up I'd see Versus return. I guess that was a fantasy.

Here is the bottom line - the overall Consumer Price Index has decreased 1.5 percent over the last 12 months (August 2009: http://www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/cpi.pdf)

Versus feels they are entitled to a 20% increase. Directv says OK, but with that kind of increase we're going to have to move you to the Sports Pack, because your channel is a niche channel rather than a mainstream channel.

car racing - appeals to some very passionate viewers, but very few nationwide.
NHL - appeals to quite a few, but it is sectional to the Northeast and midwest states primarily; minimal appeal across the country. ESPN walked away from NHL due to very low ratings.
College Football - MW conference games, 5 Pac 10 and Big 12 games. This year a couple of decent games with mass appeal.
Cagefighting - this is not a sport is it?
Bull riding - perhaps a few passionate viewers, but mass appeal?
Reruns of old movies - can find those anywhere.
Lots of infomercials - I've already got plenty of those channels - and those channels seem to make money for Directv when they put them on the system themselves; why does Directv want its infomercial channels to compete with Versus infomercials.

I think as a business decision, it is an incredibly tough sell for a 20% increase with the content Versus has. The cost of the Choice Xtra pack is already approaching $90 when you throw in DVRs. Unemployment is high, we have horrible economic conditions that haven't been this dismal since the depression era.

I just do not see how in the world Comcast can ask for a 20% increase in this market with the content they have. After talking about it with my wife if the Choice Xtra pack has to increase to accomodate this we may have to back off the package and drop down. During college football and basketball seasons I've traditionally bought the sports pack, but thats a $12.99 hit.

Where do all these channel execs think all this money comes from? It's almost getting ridiculous. I think Versus is a case for ala carte pricing. It's got very little appeal and they want so much cash. If our elected leaders in Washington were listening we'd have: (1) ala carte pricing model of some kind, and/or (2) a system whereby a competitor (comcast) does not own a channel (comcast) and manipulates the rates across the spectrum.

also Im in a payment plan for NFL Sunday Ticket..They'd laugh their a$$es off if i said Im leaving..They've banked my money and are still owed more $ from Sunday Ticket..So if they evey had a fleeting moment in which they care about any customer, they sure wont with this one. Im headin over to the VS site to see how many of my NHL locals will be blacked out..Im in NYC only care about my NY Rangers, but lets see how many NJ Devils & NY Islanders game fall on the no fly zone ...LINE of DEATH channel

came back to edit NY'ers (NYC NY city people) are out 16 games..counting the Devils/Rangers/Islanders in one bunch
    or to break it down

8 NY Rangers games --> 2 with the Devils
6 NJ Devils games --> 2 with the NY Rangers
    2 NY Islanders games

northern NY'ers i havent forgotten you

7 Sabres games are in the no fly zone

Not that the Duke Kansas game is a big game or anything, but Duke is from this area. I pay DirecTV whatever they charge to make sure that I get the maximium number of College Football games possible and yet I can't see this game.

Not all DirecTV viewers got Versus. I know Family didn't, did Choice?
Doesn't DirecTV want to relegate it to the sports package?
I think the Dish 250 package is pretty similar to the Choice Xtra pack isn't it? It's about the same price.
I could see DirecTV compromising and moving Versus to XTra.

Folks, John Malone has a very long history of tough negotiations in channel carriage deals. He didn't get the nickname Darth Vader for nothing.
