Can the HR DVR be mounted vertically on a wall?

Sure, no reason why not. The hard drive is the only real moving part, and they really don't care about their physical orientation.

IR remote might not work well pointed at the ground..

To maintain good air circulation, I have my two HR21-700s mounted with the fan pointing up. They have been that way now for about 18 months with no problems. Since I have them mounted on the wall in a closet, I use a Radio Shack IR repeater to control them from the 3 HD TVs in the house.

Thnaks, that what I want to do. Why not use the RF option?

I also have an HR10-250 and a couple of ReplayTVs in the same closet and I like to use one universal remote to control everything.
