Correct, USB. You can transfer recordings to or from the built in HD to the external. You have menus in the DVR section to change between devices.

Finally got the "new" Hopper3 installed, and already I've had to reset it twice after it completely froze up.

Here's a list of DVR issues that hopefully somebody has some guidance to deal with. I compiled these a few weeks ago, but stopped adding things because I couldn't keep up with all the issues. Some of these are resolved with one or more button clicks, but it seems like even those should be avoidable (as they were on the DTV DVRs).

1.) Sometimes buffer jumps to live automatically when you're just a few seconds behind live TV.

2.) No easy way to easily delete recorded program when you reach the end, if it's an older episode (you have to scroll all the way to the top of available episode list to delete). You can go back to the DVR list, but that's a bunch of button clicks too.

3.) Cannot see progress bar of recorded program when you're fast forwarding or rewinding.

4.) Sometimes info button displays info for channel you just changed away from.

5.) Tile view on DVR page (no option for list view). Some tiles make it difficult to read the title of the program. Just give me a title list!

6.) Sometimes the guide defaults to 400s range for no apparent reason.

7.) When you try to change the channel when you're not live, you must go back to live view first (sometimes good, but often annoying).

8.) Pressing recall changes the channel but also opens a banner that doesn't allow you to enter a different channel number until the banner is cleared.

9.) No 10-second rewind of live TV on Joey (it skips back 20 seconds, and cannot fast forward without automatically jumping back to live).

10.) To delete a timer: five button clicks, scroll to program in list, five more button clicks. Such a poor design.

Any thoughts? Serious replies only. I'm asking for help, not automatically assuming things are broken just to complain.

Since the original Hopper. The receiver doesn't like being a couple of seconds away from live.
Hit stop. Arrow over to delete. Program gone.
    I see a progress bar.
Another thing that was in the original design and is not likely to change.
I get a warning if I am watching delayed TV (not recorded, just buffered) but it is a good warning since one loses the buffer when changing channels. One click on the warning and the channel changes.
Press BACK if the banner doesn't clear fast enough.
DVR-UP-OVER-OVER-Down to timer (assuming one starts from watching TV). Select-Down-Down-Delete-Yes. I have done it so many times I never counted clicks. How would you do it with less clicks? From the program guide you can select a program marked to record, Select-Down (Delete Timer)-Select and it is gone.

I've never had this issue but I use custom channel lists 99% of the time so the 400's aren't in my list. Once you figure out which channels you like you can set up custom channel lists and not even see channels you don't want on the list.

Glitches get fixed in periodic software updates. As I said before, features that are different than DTV are not going to be changed for a DTV customer waltzing in here. Just learn how things work. It won't take long to appreciate that the Hopper3 is far superior to what you had before, both in features and how it works. Relax and enjoy it!

    Thanks for the reply.

For #2, where is "stop?" I can delete the program when I reach the end, but if there are many newer episodes, I have to scroll up the list to get to the trash can icon.

For #3, sorry, I meant "skip" forward, not fast forward. I like the skip feature, except that it gives you no idea how far into the recording you are.

I use custom lists that include the 400s.

Granted, this happens a lot less than it did on the old Hopper, but it has happened at least once.

I'm learning how things work, and I'm not very satisfied by the answers from long-time users. There are features of DTV DVRs that simply worked better, with fewer clicks -- and that's a subjective opinion that cannot be wrong (or right, for that matter). But I'm being told "it's just the way it is."

To expand on something that DTV did better:

I like to see the progress of a show without pausing or FFW/REW. On DTV, pressing the play button revealed the progress bar. On Dish, play and pause are the same button, so you can't press play when a show is playing -- it pauses the program.

Hit Pause. You will see how much program is left, or how much that's been recorded that you haven't watched yet.
Hitting Play/Pause again restarts your playback.

Pressing "Select" should also show the remaining time on the info bar at the top.

As far as "stop" ... I programmed the single diamond button at the bottom of the remote as "Stops Recording of Playback" (since I missed the stop button on the old style remote). (Hold the button down to change the programming.)
Select, left arrow, select is also "stop". Or press the Google Assistant voice button and say "stop".

I left DirecTv after 18 years to sign up with Dish. What a mistake!!!! Direct has their issues but I’m hating Dish. They have lied to me several times and if I talk to 3 people I get 4 different answers. Going back to DirecTv as soon as I can.

What don't you like about Dish, specifically? You're not the first person here to do that. Be interesting to know more.

I have had the same problem with DISH CSR's lying to me all the time.

I have been calling in to DISH about the RSN's for months.

Before the hockey season a CSR said he was going to give me NHL Center ICE for free for the whole season.

Come to find out that I couldn't watch my local team because of territorial restrictions and that he had only credited me for 2/3 of the season.

Another DISH rep said during the baseball season last year that I should go to friends and families houses to watch my favorite baseball team. Interesting suggestion.

One DISH CSR had no idea what USA Today was when I cited negotiations between DISH and Sinclair.

Another DISH CSR said the Fox RSN's were going to be back by the end of March because Direct TV's contract with the Fox RSN's was going to be up then to and Dish would have more leverage. Only to find out Direct TV has a
long term agreement with the RSN's.

Now for some reason DISH is unwilling to negotiate my price.

I was getting a forty dollar discount for a year. Now the CSR's are telling me discounts need to be need to be built up t be given.

When I challenged that DISH was raising my price by 43 dollars - the CSR said we aren't raising the price we just aren't giving a discount anymore. What?

All of this to a customer of thirteen years.

For one if I have the same show on in 2 different rooms the delay between the 2 is irritating. I hear the living room tv say it then hear the tv in my sons room say it 2-3 seconds later. Never did with DirecTv.
My biggest complaint is I asked for my bill to be due on a certain date, was told no problem. When first bill came it was due to soon. I called and was told after I paid it the next would be due when I requested. Now it’s due the same wrong date again, called them was told this time the same thing. I have it in chat that the screwed up and dropped ball. Once again told to pay this one and would change it to the date I requested when it was installed. Seems like a convenient line to use. I’m refusing because they screwed up.
Currently in process of getting Direct back. They’ve been offering me some great deals since I left.
I’ll send Dish their stuff back, cancel the card they have on file and be done with them.

    Great...
NOT "raising your price" because adding the dropped discount is what you would be normally charged and the 3$ is probably tax.
    I WILL TELL YOU THIS;
Customer service USE TO BE GREAT. I wish ERGAN would read this. If he wants to stop the bleeding of SUBS, he needs to GO BACK to his ORIGINAL company blueprint.

The New York Yankees. At the moment, that's the only thing that keeps me on D*. Yes, I know there are no games at this time.
