"Viacom will focus on six flagship network brands as it looks to revitalize its core cable business, the company said in its fiscal Q1 ratings report Thursday, including a rebranded Spike TV, which will become Paramount Network."

"The company, under CEO Bob Bakish, will put “the full power of Viacom” behind the brands, including BET, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr. and Paramount, which in particular will get a major brand boost as it takes over Spike TV in 2018. The new Paramount Network will serve as Viacom’s “premiere general entertainment brand,” combining Spike’s programming and the movie-based Paramount brand."

"Viacom's focus on six core cable brands will inevitably come at the expense of other Viacom-owned networks such as VH1, CMT and TV Land."

With a lot of hoopla this crew of empty suits has walked away from one after another viable niche in pursuit of the all important 18-35 demo. Killing TNN for "Spike" which is indistinguishable from the other two dozen recent rerun and not-good-enough-for-OTA "original" programming channels.

    It faild. This will too.

Sounds like it will be the Paramount version of FX. If it shows first to cable movies like FX does then it should do better than Spike. Though they probably need to develop original programming for it like FX does if they really want to match its success.

There was an article about the direction they want to move in today's Los Angeles times (before the announcement of the rebrand). Frankly they are right and this is smart imho. Not sure which channels I'd do what to but they need to redo their thinking from the ground up. I expect this channel to do much better in the long run than any other Viacom channel if they are really going to focus like the article suggests.

I would take Spike TV and TV Land and rebrand them. Make them Paramount Drama and Paramount Comedy respectively.
