(Back to DBS since old C Band days, so bear with me--not sure if this thread exists already. Had this problem since June where when trying to use the Pay Per View Certificates (free in the Stars and Stripe Pack for Veteran husband), whenever I ordered a VOD movie--either on MyDish app, or on main PC in browser at DISH website, phone menu or even having a tech support do it--it would generate another movie rental (I only got one email for the one movie I rented) and CHARGE ME FOR IT! Also, the movie certificates don't work--one is about to expire Oct 17 but when I try to use it, get the message "Invalid..."

I have called Tech Support, talked to Tech Support supervisors, Advanced Tech and Advanced Tech supervisors (who have copious notes) and finally Account Specialist. The acknowledge this is a known issue (at least at Advanced Tech Supervisor level) and they haven't been able to remedy it, don't know when it will be remedied and can offer NO COMPENSATION for this problem. Aside from the pixelated Off the air DVR recordings that have been a problem since major software upgrade several years ago, this is one of several issues they don't seem to want to take care of for the customer.

Have been a DISH customer 12 years this November. DO they want me to leave--I think so. Any ideas? Have a Hopper with Sling and Hopper 2000. Giving up--will just buy DVD's of all the movies I want to save that are on the DVR as by the time I pay $22 a month just for the 2 DVR rentals (after purchasing one of them outright) I think that would be less than paying for something that doesn't work half the time and DISH wants to DITCH!

I always just text the number to rent because it actually asks you what payment option you want to use...that way I can specify CERT (certificate) before the movie is rented. That way I know its being applied properly and I also have evidence if I somehow got charged for a rental.

If you want to go then go, but texting the order ALWAYS works for me.

Thanks! I completely disconnected internet to DISH as ANOTHER movie showed up that I did not order or anything like it. Noone else in our household and both retired. We live in rural area where noone else in range of our router which has password, etc and is firewalled. I checked my router and saw that DISH had created a direct bypass of the router (one of the techs who wanted to "remote" to our receiver) so I deleted that and have no internet connection at all.

Will I have to reconnect internet to use the texting option and where do I find that?

It would be nice to try the texting but by having no internet connection I can't even use the Free On Demand. Am thinking of going to lowest program package just to keep DVR recordings and then picking up Philo Streaming which has most of the channels I watch...

You can use the text messages to order movies with the box either online or offline. You can still rent the Videos on Demand too because apparently it saves them overnight on your DVR from the satellite (no internet necessary). So when you rent it just allows you to instantly watch what is already hidden on your DVR. Our box is usually disconnected because we can't get internet at our house unless its over a cell phone hotspot.

When texting you just text MOVIE to the Dsih order number. After few seconds they ask you which channel number the movie is on so you respond. If the channel is either 1 or 501 (VOD) they ask you for the order ID # found at the end of the movie description found in programming guide. Then it states what movie you have selected and you text ORDER to confirm. Then it asks you to text CERT if you are using a certificate to pay or text OTHER if you want to pay another way. Then it replies and tells you your order was successful. The whole process takes like 45 seconds.

I have no idea what Philo is, but I'm sure if you take yourself over to the cordcutters forum they can fill you in on that life.

Yep the number is 34741, I looked through my text history and every time I've ordered a movie I always started off with texting MOVIE...the order number is available when you have the channel/movie highlighted in your guide and you press the Info button. In your case I would call Dish and see if you could disable the rent now button feature on your box so that you can only rent with text messages...that should completely solve your problem with phantom rentals.
