I Have a Wally receiver that is several years old. I am interested in being able to use the voice command feature. If I purchase a 54.1 remote and a usb wifi adapter, should I be able to set it up? Do I need to purchase a Dish wifi adapter or will a generic one work just as well? Thanks for any help. I am new to Dish.

Getting the 54.1 remote - no problem. You can get it from Dish.

USB WIFI - not going to work. What you need is something you can plug the ETHERNET port on your Wally that is a WIFI repeater. Or, you can get an Ethernet over Powerline bridge system (one end at the Wally, the other with your router).

I guess I did not understand what I read. That you suggested sounds way to complicated for me. Thanks anyway.

I was not aware that the voice remote required a usb adapter, I thought it was through the RF signal from the remote to the receiver.

Not sure. I guess I will have to call Dish and ask them.

You may need a Google device set up to interpret your voice. I have an Amazon Alexa, whatever the Google equivalent is.

I am beginning to think, this may not be worth the effort.

Using the voice remote for searches requires an Internet connection. Kountryguy was considering adding a USB Wi-Fi to his receiver to get an Internet connection. I do not believe USB Wi-Fi is supported.

So far as I know - a USB WIFI is not supported. That's why I suggested the Ethernet over Powerline adapter, or maybe something that he can plug the Wally's ethernet into that will connect via WIFI as a bridge.

If USB WiFi is not supported, why does Dish sell one?

    Huh ... it does exist.
    DISH Wally® Wi-Fi USB Adapter

    Thanks for the correction.

So, back to my original question, will the 54.1 remote work with a USB adapter for voice commands?

That USB-WiFI adapter is for internet connectivity for the Wally (and note - it's ONLY FOR THE WALLY). So, assuming you have WIFI and internet connectivity going where you use the Wally, the answer would be yes.
