I forgot the Lowes, three miles away. And the other Lowes 11 miles away. And the three Menards stores within 12 miles. The most recent happy addition was the Home Depot (11 miles) which is much better than the old distance (40 miles?).

And the best thing about Home Depot ... they put a Krispy Kreme in the parking lot. Now stores around the area have fresh donuts every day, and you can pull them right off of the machine at the main store. Hot donuts are cool.

The nearest Dish Retailer is 3 miles and a good worker (although he's only installed C band dishes for me). There are about a dozen others around.

Most of the WalMarts around here have a HD set from either Philips or RCA hooked up to an RCA branded 6000. The TVs average from 34"-40"s. The Super WalMart has a 52" HDTV hooked up, but the Super WalMart is 50 miles away in a small town, so I don't get there much. In the metro Buffalo area, we have four area WalMarts, each near one of the four area malls, plus a few up near the Falls. Most KMarts folded up, for a discount chain their prices didn't reflect it, Ames was convenient since there was one around the corner from my old high school, when I needed to pick up something, but I don't miss it. Personally, I know a few people who dislike WalMart because of the whole taking over America nonsense, but I find it funny every single one has a membership to Sam's Club.

What I don't like is WalMart locks the receivers just to show the demo channel. Why not just block HBO and SHO HD, but let the customer flip between the demo channel, Discovery and the HD Nets.

The Walmarts would have to subscribe as commercial customers to be able to show those channels. I'm suprised they don't just broadcast the HDDemo FTA and not authorize those boxes at all.

Wal-Mart customers make Costco customers look sophisticated.

In the NY area, other big discount chains were May's, Korvette's (the founder's were Korean War veterans, Kor Vets), Alexander's (bought by Donald Trump before going belly up), and Consumers Distributors (which were "catalog" stores like the defunct Service Merchendise). Plus, there was the bigass expensive department stores, Gimbles, Kleins, and Abraham & Strauss.

BTW, Wal-Mart is a full-of-sh*t company that underpays and under-benefits it American workers, while putting 10's of thousands of Americans out of work by buying most of it's goods from China. I'll bet they outsource their IT and CS to India, as well.

Ironically, the majority of its customers are the NASCAR/WWF/Flag Waiving yahoo's with the "America, Love it or Leave it" bumper stickers on their Bigfoot, dual-rear-wheel, Flowmaster-equipped pickup trucks. Maybe they oughta stick Chinese flags back there.

    The...
I called the local WM manager last week to tell him his HD tv display sucked harder than a $2 hooker. Went by today for a DVD and what I saw was unbeleebubble! :eek2: Five HD tvs - 2 16:9 RPs and 3 HD direct-views all in a row and showing the Dish HD demo channel. Pics were sharp, well-adjusted (like me!) and lookin' pretty darn good for a retail environment.

Very nice, Brunswick Ga Wal-Mart. Kudos! :)

I'll call the mgr Monday morning to cheer him up! :D

might do that myself, as the manager is frequently roaming around... they have a pep meeting every morning about 8 a.m.
